Albers School of Business and Economics

Master of Science in Business Analytics

There is a critical shortage of data science expertise in the U.S. workforce today. A report by McKinsey Global Institute states, "By 2018, the United States alone could face a shortage of 140,000 to 190,000 people with deep analytical skills as well as 1.5 million managers and analysts with the know-how to use the analysis of big data to make effective decisions."

In a fast changing and highly technical environment, today's business leaders and professionals face an exciting opportunity and a serious threat. The opportunity is that effective use of vast amounts of data collected with high frequency will lead to more timely and effective decisions about products and markets. The threat is that businesses that don't adapt will quickly become irrelevant.

The Master of Science in Business Analytics program combines deep analytical content with an emphasis on the ability to communicate with business leaders and the understanding of business problems.

Albers’ Master’s in Business Analytics program is designed to emphasize technical skills AND the abilities to:

(1) use those skills effectively in a business context, and

(2) to understand non-technically oriented managers, and be understood by them.

"Our students are the bridge between data scientists and business practitioners," says Albers Professor of Economics Dr. Gareth Green. "Indications are, there will be a 10:1 ratio of demand for graduates from our type of program relative to straight data analytics."

The Albers MS Business Analytics program has been designed around fundamental business analytic skill requirements with the opportunity to take electives in the following areas:

  • Data Analytics (offered by the College of Science and Engineering)
  • Marketing
  • Financial Economics

An added advantage for international students is that the MSBA is a STEM-Designated Degree Program

Why Albers For A Business Analytics Master's Degree?

The Master of Science in Business Analytics program at Albers is the first of its kind in the Northwest. Close to the business community in Seattle, Albers’s location in one of the fastest growing tech hubs in the country puts it in a unique position to partner with some of the nation’s most innovative and technologically advanced companies. In addition to offering us the opportunity to have a world class advisory board for the program, representatives from Microsoft, PACCAR, F5 Networks, Amazon, Boeing, Tableau, and more come to campus to mentor, speak to, teach, and recruit our students each year. As with all Albers programs, class sizes are small, faculty and staff are dedicated to student success, and you will be challenged to incorporate your new skills in real world situations. This makes Albers the perfect place to learn the skills needed to enter the rapidly growing field of business analytics. See the MSBA class profile for a more in-depth look at the current class.

Who Should Apply?

The MS in Business Analytics is for those who have an interest in identifying complex business problems in terms of analytical models, developing solutions that achieve stated objectives, and translating the results obtained into recommendations for effective courses of action. Successful graduates will be able to demonstrate ethical decision-making in structured and unstructured problem situations, the ability to communicate technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences, and will exhibit effective collaboration and leadership skills. These skills are all part of the overall learning outcomes of the program.

Students will take MSBA classes such as Communicating and Visualizing Data, Mathematical Models for Decision-Making, Data Mining for Business Intelligence, Programming for Business Analytics. At the end of the program all students will work on a capstone project, which will involve applying the techniques learned in planning and executing a real project for an industry partner.
