Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry offers annual and endowed scholarships from the great generosity of friends and donors that believe strongly in the mission and vision of the School and the value of an education specifically at Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry.
The scholarship committee reviews applications in April of each year and awards scholarships to those students that meet the scholarship criteria. Scholarships will be entered onto student accounts the last two weeks of May with scholarship award letters mailed out to students in the third week of May.
The criteria and amount of scholarship awards varies. There is a single application process for any and all of these scholarships. See below the "tips for writing your narrative" to assist you in naming components that may help you meet these scholarships' criteria.

The Archdiocese of Seattle offers financial aid for students enrolled in their Christifideles program, a combination of graduate education and Archdiocesan formation for certification as a Lay Ecclesial Minister in the local church. The program is offered in collaboration with Seattle University.
Requirements and expectations for graduation with a MAPS degree at Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry (STM) and requirements and expectations from the Archdiocese that show a demonstrated history and capacity to serve as a Lay Ecclesial Minister in the local Church, and additional formation as a Lay Ecclesial Minister (LEM) working in the Archdiocese of Seattle

Seattle University’s School of Theology and Ministry offers a one-year, 70% scholarship for newly admitted students that move to Washington from out-of-state specifically to attend the school.
We recognize that students relocating from out-of-state have additional expenses and considerations upon confirming admission. This scholarship only applies to the first year of degree program admittance. Following the first year, students are encouraged to re-apply for other scholarship options within the School of Theology and Ministry and other financial aid resources, as applicable.
The Out-of-State Scholarship applies for one-year, only for first-year, newly admitted students in a graduate degree program that are relocating from another state domestically to Washington state for Seattle University’s School of Theology and Ministry. The scholarship is not applicable for international students, or students enrolled in the Doctor of Ministry program or professional certificate programs. A minimum of six credits are required per quarter, for the duration of the academic year to which the scholarship is applied. Scholarships for Leaders of Multicultural Faith Communities are awarded for up to $1,900 per quarter (based on 6 credits) or $7,600 per year for two years. Seattle University has created these special scholarships to recognize outstanding candidates for graduate study who are members of under-represented populations.
Recipients will be selected from those individuals who meet specific eligibility requirements, demonstrate leadership in their ministry, and are unable to complete the program without financial support.

For students who have a clear call to pastoral care for those in need who may be hindered in developing their ministry by financial need beyond their means, even after receiving the ordinarily available scholarship aid. As a matter of justice in ministerial development, the purpose of this scholarship is to provide subsequent levels of scholarship support for students whose ministry is clearly needed in the world, to help alleviate insurmountable debt incurred through theological education.
This scholarship is intended to support the education of those with a particular sense of call and emerging skills in spiritual and pastoral ministry, as indicated by their development in the Ministerial and Theological Integration (MTI) sequence. While it is not the expectation that the student have fully developed skills by the end of the MTI sequence, the student's capacity for this type of ministry should be evident.
For students pursuing a Protestant or Episcopalian curriculum toward a Masters Degree at the School of Theology and Ministry with preference to those pursuing a Masters of Divinity yet open to those who may not be seeking ordination as well (whether MDiv degree or other Masters). This is to be awarded to those with a particular emphasis on spiritual and pastoral ministry. It is to be awarded after completion of MTI and upon recommendation from both the MTI faculty and field supervisors. After this criterion has been met, the award is to be given to the student with the most need within this group.
Complete the Justice in Ministry Scholarship Application as well as a Criteria Based Tuition Aid Grant Application (CBTAA), a Declaration of Credits Form, and a FAFSA by April 1st (continuing students) or upon admittance (new students). Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry has been awarded a generous grant from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. which includes scholarships for six early career pastors, with three to ten years of ministerial leadership, who are pursuing a Post-Master’s Certificate in Pastoral Leadership or a Doctor of Ministry Degree. The scholarship provides $10,033 for tuition and fees including the school's annual fee, matriculation, technology, and recreation fees. These pastors will pursue studies that both deepen their skills for leadership and support their pursuit of collaborative leadership in the public square. This scholarship will be awarded to six students per year each year for five years, this will be the forth year and begins with the Summer Quarter 2017 through Spring Quarter 2018. This certificate may also lead to a Doctor of Ministry degree.
Eligibility criteria includes students enrolled at Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry who are pursuing a Post Master’s Certificate in Pastoral Leadership. These students must also be early career pastors, with judiciary endorsement, who have completed from three to ten years of ministry. Only Pastoral Leadership students who meet the criteria are eligible for this scholarship from the Lilly Endowment, Inc. funding. Those who elect to continue on to complete a Doctor of Ministry degree would apply for financial aid and non-Lilly Endowment, Inc. funded scholarships may be available based on eligibility and availability at the time.

When writing your narrative, explain that you are requesting an Early Career Pastor’s Scholarship for the Post-Master’s Certificate in Pastoral Leadership. Please highlight your leadership, volunteer, ministerial and/or other professional experience. Please include your denominational and/or religious group and any affiliations, leadership roles and volunteer experiences specifically related to your denomination and/or religious group affiliation. You will also need to provide an extra recommendation from someone in your denominational system endorsing you as a recipient of this prestigious award.
As of July 2016, three full graduate degree scholarships for a Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies degree at Seattle University will be available for Pierce County teachers working within Archdiocese of Seattle Catholic Schools. Three teachers eligible for this special program will receive a scholarship paying for the full cost of tuition, which is currently valued at $16,632 per year.
This unique degree opportunity will integrate electives from Seattle University’s College of Education in addition to Master of Arts in Pastoral Studies coursework. These classes will be chosen by the student in conjunction with the two Seattle University deans and the Superintendent of Catholic Schools. Participants in the program will take classes together in the evenings, on the weekends, and where appropriate during the day, while maintaining their current teaching role. This partnership will contribute to building a regional infrastructure in the Archdiocese for a substantive and sustained improvement of religious education in K-12 Catholic schools in the county.
This scholarship is available to Pierce County Teachers working within Archdiocese of Seattle Catholic Schools. Eligible candidates will maintain continuous employment as a teacher working within the Catholic School System in Pierce County until degree completion, and will agree to contribute 10 hours per quarter to enhancing and leading religious education activities in Pierce County.

Once admitted, candidates should provide a letter of reference from the candidate’s principal, as well as from a representative from the Office for Catholic Schools, and submit the following forms: Criteria Based Tuition Aid Grant Application (CBTAA), a Declaration of Credits Form, and a FAFSA. Tuition Reduction for Members of Roman Catholic Canonical Religious Communities or Roman Catholic Clergy is available to School of Theology and Ministry students who are members of Catholic religious organizations, if their financial need is greater than what is provided by their community.
Students must submit a letter from a community official verifying the extent of their financial need.

The Helen and Richard Brown Endowment for Pastoral Scholarships derives from a generous gift received in the 1990s, designated to support pastoral ministry in the United Church of Christ (UCC). Since its inception, the gift of $5 million has provided over $250,000 annually to UCC Conferences, seminaries and global partners, providing individual scholarships for seminarians and sponsorships for continuing education events.
If you’re a dedicated member of the UCC, active in your local church, and responding to a call to ministry, you may be eligible to become a Brown Scholar. If you’re a leader in a regional ministry, your organization may be eligible to receive Brown funds to offer continuing education and ministerial support. Disciple Seminary Foundation is dedicated to supporting students at various levels of theological education. Their students are individuals who are exploring a call to ministry or who are in the process of receiving advanced degrees in theological education at the Master of Arts, Master of Divinity, or Doctoral level.

The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) denomination offers a number of scholarships through its Disciples Home Missions office, as investments in persons preparing for ministry in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. By completing an application, you will be considered for any scholarship for which you qualify.

To be eligible for any Disciples Home Missions’ scholarships, the applicant must: be a member of a congregation in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada; be preparing for ministry in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada; know that GPA may be a determining factor in consideration of scholarships awarded; provide evidence of financial need; be enrolled as a full-time student (at least 9 credit hours per semester) in an ATS accredited seminary or school; be enrolled in an M.Div., or equivalent degree program; provide official transcript(s) of academic work; provide three references; one from each of the following persons: a regional minister from one of the 33 regions of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada from the region with which you are under care, the pastor of your home CC (DOC) congregation or from the CC (DOC) congregation wherein you are a member, and a professor (seminary or undergraduate).
Exceptions to some of the above qualifications may be made within the Michael Scholarship, Star-Supporter and African American Scholarship fund programs. First-year students entering may substitute the regional minister with a reference from a recognized executive minister of racial ethnic ministries of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in the United States and Canada. No referent can be a relative. It is each applicant’s responsibility to ensure ALL required materials are received by Disciples Home Missions, Office of Scholarships, by the stated deadlines. Thus, applicants may want to check with office with sufficient time before deadline to make sure their materials have been received, if they have any questions.
Seattle University has signed a contract with the Veterans Administration to provide funding for 80 undergraduate and 30 graduate students through the Yellow Ribbon Program.

Should your credit projections change after the pre-registration deadline of April 1st, changes must be submitted to Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry's Financial Aid Manager in writing 14 days before each quarter's classes begin.
Tuition aid may not be available for credits added after the April 1st financial aid application deadline and aid is not transferable to subsequent quarters.
Seattle University School of Theology and Ministry's financial aid budget is finite. The amount and percentage of aid each student receives is determined every spring for the subsequent academic year. It is directly proportionate to each student's credit load, and additions and decreases in credits affect the amount of aid available to other students of the School. When courses are dropped after the published add/drop dates, students receive only a portion of their tuition back. Likewise, the School is reimbursed only a portion of the aid extended to students who drop after the deadline. Ultimately, this too affects the amount available for others in need. It is important that each student plan his or her course load wisely, in conjunction with their academic advisor and completes a course projection annually, notifies the Financial Aid Coordinator in writing of any changes in the credit load, and observes all deadlines.
The amount of your tuition aid grant is based proportionately on the number of credits you projected you would be registering for on your Declaration of Credits form. If you increase or decrease your course load, your credits will not match what you have been given a scholarship for and your aid will not release. If you do not notify the School of Theology and Ministry Financial Aid Manager about your change of credits, you could forfeit some or all of your financial aid grant. There is no guarantee that there will be additional scholarship funding available from the pool for an increase in the number of credits that you might be taking so please plan accordingly. Conversely, if you are reducing credits, the funds need to be reduced from your award and returned back to the pool so it is available for other students who are increasing their credits and have a financial need. Please make sure that you report any change in the number of credits you will be taking to the School Financial Aid Manager, Beth Smith, prior to the beginning of each quarter. Changes must be made in writing, by email, or by completing the necessary change of credits form in the School of Theology and Ministry office.

In rare cases, a student in extreme or unexpected financial hardship may write a scholar appeal letter to the School of Theology and Ministry Scholarship Committee requesting a review of their scholarship award and asking for an increase. The appeal should explain the reason(s) for why the increase is needed and what changes you will be making to become financially stable. Please send the appeal to Beth Smith at the contact information listed above. You will be notified of the Scholarship Committee’s decision within approximately two weeks of your request.
