Sister Maria Nassali, School of Theology and Ministry Alumna, receives P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship

May 3, 2017

Sister Maria Nassali was born and raised in Byerima Village in the Rakai district in Southern Uganda. At Seattle University, she earned a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, a Master of Arts in Tranformational Leadership from the School of Theology and Ministry and she is currently working on her Doctorate in Educational Leadership.

In order to help cover costs of finishing her doctoral program, Nassali applied for the P.E.O. International Peace Scholarship. P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization) is an organization that focuses on supporting and promoting educational opportunities for women. The International Peace Scholarship Fund provides scholarships for selected women from other countries who need financial support for their graduate studies. Nassali was selected as an International Peace Scholarship recipient for the maximum scholarship award for the next academic year.

Nassali’s studies directly develop and inform her various ministry goals and efforts. Her continued education aligns with P.E.O.’s belief that “education is fundamental to world peace and understanding.”

Nassali says,

“My major goal is to finish the  Doctorate program and go back to Uganda where I will be ministering to students in colleges and teaching women skills that will enable them to overcome domestic violence and abject poverty. This scholarship is making it possible for me to learn more skills that I will use in my ministries.”

In addition to finishing her doctoral program, Nassali and fellow Seattle University alumna, Cindy Pickreign, run a non-profit, Empower Your Neighbor. Nassali and Pickreign met in the Transformational Leadership program and founded Empower Your Neighbor to help women and children in Southern Uganda. Read the full story here.
