OrganiCup Basic Information

CampusCup is a campaign run by All Matters/OrganiCup to make periods on college/university campuses more sustainable. To do this, All Matters/Organicup provides partnering campuses with free menstrual cups. CampusCup has taken place at 90+ US campuses since 2019. Seattle University is a partner university this academic year.

What you should know about OrganiCup:

• Menstrual cups are one option to use for a patient’s period. Try it, but If you don’t like it, there are many other menstrual products available such as tampons or menstrual pads.
• OrganiCup comes in three different sizes: Mini, A, B.
  • Mini: for teens or those who need a smaller cup.
  • A: for those who have not given birth vaginally.
  • B: for those who have given birth vaginally.
• To use, fold and insert. The OrganiCup will form a suction to prevent leaks. View the following 5-min video with detailed instructions on how to use an OrganiCup.
• OrganiCup can hold up to three tampons worth depending on the flow. It is recommended to empty/rinse more often when first using for the user to better understand their flow.
• OrganiCup can be used for up to two years, 12 hours at a time. Rather than absorbing blood like tampons or pads, a cup collects the blood and will need to be rinsed in between uses.
• ORGANICUP INGREDIENTS:
  • Made of 100% soft medical-grade silicone. No BPA, latex or dyes are used.
  • The product is registered with the Vegan Society (no animal testing has been done).
  • OrganiCup is AllergyCertified (i.e. certified by an international certification organization assuring that there is minimal risk of developing allergy due to usage).
• PRIOR TO USE OF YOUR ORGANICUP: 
  • Sterilize the menstrual cup in boiling water for 3-5 minutes.
  • Read the manufacturer’s manual carefully.
  • Contact your doctor, gynecologist, midwife, or the SU Student Health Center with any questions about the use of menstrual cups, its pros & cons, and important health information to be aware of.
• IMPORTANT NOTE: Organicup can be used with an IUD, but you should consult your doctor or gynecologist prior to use.

Environmental Impact

• Menstrual pads/tampons can take up to 500 years to degrade. Using a cup would eliminate this waste. A single person will use between 5,000 and 15,000 pads and tampons during their lifetime, resulting in about 400 pounds of packaging and waste. Read more.
• In the United States alone, approximately 20 billion sanitary napkins, tampons and tampon applicators are discarded each year. The largest environmental impact of tampons and pads is the processing of raw materials used in their production, in particular, the plastics used in pads and tampon applicators. Read more.
• One OrganiCup can be used for two years, eliminating waste of menstrual pads and tampons (roughly 500 products would be eliminated with the use of one cup instead). CampusCup has reached about 25,000 students so far, eliminating over 13 million disposable menstrual products. Read more.

Social Impact

• Period poverty is the lack of access to sanitary products, menstrual hygiene education, toilets, hand washing facilities, and/or waste management. The cultural shame attached to menstruation and a shortage of resources stop women from going to school and working every day. Read more.
• Due to high prices of tampons and pads as well as a high tax on these products, many cannot afford the products resulting in unsanitary and dangerous health situations. Read more.
