Why does SU have furniture standards?

SU Facilities Design + Construction (D+C) is responsible for the development and implementation of furniture standards for our campus. D+C specifies quality furniture that is a good long-term value to the University.

We take the following measures to ensure our campus furniture is well-planned and coordinated:

  • We verify that all furniture on campus meets applicable codes and safety requirements.
  • We strive for furniture with a minimum 10-year warranty.
  • We ensure there is a local vendor that can make on-campus repairs for the life of the warranty.
  • We specify fabrics for their durability, lightfastness, stain resistance, and ease of cleaning.
  • We do our best to increase our ability to re-use furniture across campus as needs change.

Can Facilities Services repair my broken furniture?

Often, our furniture is eligible for warranty repairs or replacements.

Can I move or rearrange furniture by myself?

Facilities Services is available to help move or rearrange furniture items on campus. In general, we discourage you from moving most furniture items on your own to avoid any injury to you and/or damage to our University resources. We also need to ensure that the new configuration is compliant with codes such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Can I swap furniture with my colleagues?

University furniture is assigned to a room or space – not to a user; moving any furniture to a different location must be approved by D+C in advance. We also need to ensure that the new configuration is compliant with codes such as the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

How can I get furniture from surplus?

D+C maintains an inventory of surplus items and can add you to a “wish list.” If we don’t currently have the item you need, we can contact you if it becomes available. All requests will be filled in the order received. We do try to ensure that any item matches the standard for the room and building. Please note our space and supply is limited so we cannot guarantee that we can fill your request in a timely manner.

Can you store furniture for my department?

Unfortunately, we do not have room to store furniture or other items. A limited number of furniture items can be added to our surplus inventory, but these items will become available to all members of our community and cannot be held for specific departments.

Can I get a sit to stand workstation?

Yes, our campus standard for sit-to-stand applications is the Humanscale QuickStand.  This model was chosen because it increases our ability to re-use it as needs change, requires fewer alterations to the workspace, and can be safely secured to all types of desk configurations.

Can I get a new desk chair?

D+C can show you the campus standard chair options

Can you help me select new furniture?

Our staff interior designer can explain space and furniture standards and evaluate your space for appropriate floor plans and show you your options for colors, fabrics etc.

Can I choose the furniture I would like to buy?

All furniture on campus needs to be selected in consultation with D+C. D+C is responsible for approving all furniture purchases. If you have a specific goal in mind for your space, we will work with you to provide options that will meet your needs.

Can I bring in my own furniture to supplement or replace University supplied furniture?

All furniture located on campus must be University owned. We strive to create a campus environment that is well-planned and coordinated. We must ensure that all furniture meets applicable codes and safety requirements. SU cannot assume the maintenance of items not purchased by the University. In the past, such items were frequently discarded on campus when users left or grew tired of them, and the University paid the cost of disposal. If you feel your current furniture is not meeting your needs, D+C will evaluate your space and furniture needs.

Why does D+C specified furniture cost so much?

As stewards of the University's resources, D+C strives to provide quality furniture that is a good long-term value, which may not equate with the lowest purchase price. Residential furniture or furniture from online retailers rarely meet our quality and value criteria.

Can I buy new furniture from Ikea, Amazon, Costco, or another online retailer?

These suppliers have great products for home use, but the materials and construction are typically not appropriate for commercial use. Many of their items do not comply with fire codes or OSHA standards for use in commercial spaces.  In addition, these suppliers do not provide on-site assembly and warranty repairs. Facilities Services will not assemble new furniture for you.

Does D+C have funds to pay for new furniture?

D+C does not have an operating budget for new furniture or furniture maintenance.
