It’s official. Seattle University has set a new record with its largest-ever incoming class of undergraduates this fall.

The 2018 freshmen class of 1,083 students is the highest number ever in its 127-year history, significantly exceeding the university’s goal, and reflects a 13 percent increase over fall 2017’s freshmen enrollment. The number of transfer students, 431, was also higher than expected and brings the total number of new students to 1,514.

“We are grateful that so many students are choosing Seattle University because of our transformative Jesuit education and the unique opportunities it offers students from our location in the heart of one of the most dynamic and forward-thinking cities in the world,” said Provost Shane P. Martin. “Our accomplished faculty and staff welcome them with great enthusiasm, and look forward to providing them an exceptional academic and student experience.”

Though the data is still being compiled, “I’m pleased with the level of academic quality and the diversity of our new students,” said Melore Nielsen, Dean of Admissions.

She said that SU’s strong enrollment of transfer students is particularly significant.

“I’m thrilled with the transfer numbers because most colleges have seen declines in transfer students with both domestic and international enrollments down at many community colleges,” says Nielsen. “I think it speaks to our distinctive and excellent education as well as our advantageous location.”

Nielsen said one third of the new transfers are international students largely coming from Seattle-area community colleges.

Total enrollment at Seattle U this fall is 7,291 students.
