A Note From Dean Swanson

Dr. Kristen M. Swanson, Dean of the College of Nursing

As we near the finish of one of the most unusual academic years I can remember and, with spring commencement in sight, I want to take a moment to celebrate the hard-earned accomplishments of our students. Two BSN students will be honored at Seattle University’s Virtual Commencement Ceremony on June 13, 2021, for their academic achievements. Lindsey Bui, BSN ’21, is the recipient of the 2021 President’s Award. Sydney Stafford, BSN ’21, will receive the 2021 Provost’s Award.

Dr. JaHun Kim Receives Scholarly Writing Award from the Journal of School Nursing

JaHun Kim, PhD, RN, received the 2021 Scholarly Writing Award from the Journal of School Nursing for her article, Cyberbullying and Victimization and Youth Suicide Risk: The Buffering Effects of School Connectedness.

Four Seattle University Students receive Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization Scholarship

Congratulations to Seattle University nursing students, Fartun Ashoor, BSN ’21, Adunya Mohamed, BSN ’22, Bedriya Seid, BSN ’22, and Ezinne Ufomadu, DNP ’24, who were awarded Mary Mahoney Professional Nurses Organization (MMPNO) scholarships. A total of eleven students received scholarships this year from different colleges and universities in the Seattle area.

Shaina Ann Tupas Santonil Receives Loretta Ford Centennial Scholarship

Shaina Ann Tupas Santonil, BSN, RN, DNP ‘23, is a doctoral student in the Family Nurse Practitioner track at Seattle University. She is among the five awardees selected to receive the Loretta Ford Centennial Scholarship from the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP).

Kayla Christine Salle de Leon Receives Rosemary Ford Future of Oncology Nursing Scholarship

Kayla Christine Salle de Leon, a junior in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program at Seattle U and a strong advocate for the health care needs of Black and Indigenous People of Color (BIPOC), was among the 2021 awardees of the Rosemary Ford Future of Oncology Nursing Scholarship awarded by the Seattle Cancer Care Alliance (SCCA).

Six Seattle University Students Receive King County Nurses Association Scholarships

Congratulations to Masuma Baset, DNP ’24, Cordelia Cochran, DNP ’23, and Brigette Gardea, BSN ’22, Hannah Morrison, DNP ’24, Amber Rodriguez-Munoz, BSN ’22, Jessica Schuster, DNP ’23 for receiving scholarships from the King County Nurses Association (KCNA).Students selected by KCNA demonstrate an understanding of equity and social justice through creative ideas to improve health disparities in our community. They embody the values of collaboration, compassion, innovation, and community wellness.

Alumna and CON Faculty Member Renée Rassilyer-Bomers, '03, '05, '16 is Driving Force Behind Swedish Community Vaccination Clinic at Seattle University

Renée Rassilyer-Bomers entered Seattle University through the Matteo Ricci College where she completed her senior year of high school while simultaneously earning college credit. And she’s never left. A triple alumna and Naef Scholar, she earned bachelor’s degrees in nursing and humanities, then dove straight into the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) program. In 2005 she joined the Seattle U College of Nursing (CON) faculty, while concurrently navigating a professional trajectory into leadership at Swedish Hospital. In 2016 she completed the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program at Seattle U.
