Having my family there and being surrounded by my Jesuit brothers and so many great alumni and friends of Seattle U was a moment I will always treasure. I consider it a sacred privilege to lead this university and with students at the center of everything I strive to do and to be about as president, it was gratifying that this year’s Gala brought in a record-setting level of support for student scholarships. I am grateful to you, our alumni and friends, not only for your support but also for who you are and how you represent the best of our institution.

Reflecting on Racism, Humanity and the Tragedy in Charlottesville

What happened in Charlottesville, Virginia, this past weekend was deeply disturbing, shocking, appalling and painful to witness. We cannot condemn strongly enough the white supremacists who marched on the city and across the University of Virginia campus, their actions and the racist, hate-filled views they espouse. Everything they represent runs counter to the values we uphold at Seattle University and our commitment to a welcoming, inclusive and equitable society.

Climate Change and Divestment

I want to share my personal views with you on climate change and divestment. I am deeply disappointed and concerned with President Trump’s decision to withdraw from the Paris climate accord. I have joined other university, business and elected leaders in reaffirming a commitment to our climate goals. I also want to express my personal support for divestment from fossil fuels and continuing to explore how we can do so responsibly. Climate change is a defining issue for our students’ generation and their future. I stand with all who are committed to addressing it with a sense of urgency. Seattle University has made significant progress in recent years through our operations and programming to do our part, including the work of the President’s Committee for Sustainability (PCS) in implementing our Climate Action Plan.

Provost Search Update

After meeting with members of the search committee and giving careful consideration to evaluations from our faculty, staff and students, I have decided not to offer the position of provost to either of our current candidates. While both finalists are excellent individuals with strong, relevant experience, I believe we are faced with a unique set of challenges and opportunities that demand we select an exceptional leader with a clear and compelling vision for our university and its academic programs and initiatives. We intend to reopen the search in late summer and interview final candidates on campus in the fall.
