Fulbright Scholar Program

• Fulbright Flex Global Scholar Awards
  • provide scholars with the opportunity to engage in teaching, research and/or professional projects in multiple countries
• Flex Awards
  • offer multiple, short-term stays in the host country over a period of one to two years
• Fulbright Public Policy Fellowships
  • provide opportunities for early and mid-career professionals and practitioners in the United States to serve in a partner foreign government ministry or institution
• Postdoctoral Awards
  • Postdoctoral Awards are open to scholars who will have received a doctoral degree (Ph.D., J.D., M.D., Ed.D., etc.) within five to seven years of the fellowship start date, as noted in the award description
  • Degree conferment before the start of the award is mandatory
• Distinguished Scholar Awards
  • Most prestigious award
  • Open to scholars who have more than seven years experience in their discipline or area of expertise, some awards may further restrict eligibility

• U.S. Citizenship
• Applicants who have resided abroad for five or more consecutive years in the six-year period preceding the application deadline are ineligible.
• Terminal degree
  • Award descriptions specify where a Ph.D., other terminal degree, or comparable professional qualifications are required
• Previous Fulbright recipients are eligible to apply again two years after the completion of the previous award.

In your application, you will propose a project within one of the following categories:

•  Teaching
  • Classroom, guest lectures, workshops, seminars
  • May be designed by scholar or prescribed by host institution

• Research
  • Research includes activities involving scientific research, qualitative research, quantitative research, and practice-based research, including artistic research.
  • Research can take place in locations such as the laboratory, the field, the archives, or an artist residency.
  • It can be experimental, clinical, or applied.

• Teaching / Research
  • A combination of the above two areas

• Professional Project
  • Provides professionals and artists in various fields the opportunity to interact with relevant organizations abroad to explore a topic related to their field without answering a defined research question

In Fulbright terminology, "award" is used interchangeably with "opportunity." The first step in your application process is identifying an award that will best suit your project.

  • Share with peers, Fulbright alumni, OSP for review and feedback

• October & November
  • Peer Review Committees evaluate applications, meeting to review and determine whether or not applications are recommended for further consideration in the host country.
• December
  • Applicants are notified by email whether or not their application has been recommended for further consideration in the host country. 
• January - June
  • Public Affairs Sections of U.S. Embassies (Posts) or binational Fulbright Commissions overseas review recommended applications and nominate candidates for selection.
  • IIE notifies candidates whether they have been selected to receive a Fulbright award.

The purpose of the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad (GPA) Program is to promote, improve, and develop the study of modern foreign languages and area studies in the United States. The program provides opportunities for faculty, teachers, and undergraduate and graduate students to conduct group projects overseas. Projects may include either (1) short-term seminars, curriculum development, or group research or study, or (2) long-term advanced intensive language programs.

There are three types of GPA short-term projects:

1. short-term seminar projects of 4 to 6 weeks in length designed by the applicant to help participants integrate international studies into the curriculum at an institution of higher education (IHE) or a school system when they return to the United States, by focusing on a particular aspect of area studies, such as the culture of an area or country of study;
2. curriculum development projects of 4 to 8 weeks in length that provide participants the opportunity to acquire resource materials for curriculum development in modern foreign language and area studies for use and dissemination in the United States; and
3. group research or study projects of 3 to 12 months in duration designed to give participants the opportunity to undertake research or study in a foreign country.
