Prepare for a Rewarding Career in Seattle’s Biotech Industry
The specialized BS degree in cellular and molecular biology equips students with the tools they need to succeed in the rapidly growing fields of biotechnology and biomedical research.
The major is designed for students who want to focus on understanding recent scientific advances in areas of genetics, bioinformatics, biotechnology, genomics, immunology, cell biology and more.
Seattle is a hub for biotechnology and biomedical research, providing students the opportunity to work in front-line research and clinical labs.
Educating for Rapid Technological Change
Based on our Jesuit and Catholic values, your academically challenging education will teach you more than the technical and professional skills you need for career success.
Your classes will also have a strong emphasis on ethics technology and potential applications, help you reflect on your personal values and prepare you to bring your full self to your work so that you can make a positive impact every day
Students in Intro Biology Courses
To build your foundation of success, we offer small class size from day one.
Women
Our average of women STEM students nearly doubles the national average of only 23%.
Student Research Participation

Cell and Molecular Biology Majors and Health Careers
Courses within the CMOL degree provide excellent preparation for careers in many health sciences. Elective choices within the CMOL major include many health-related biology courses and will provide research experience in the curriculum.
Senior Synthesis and Research Projects
In your senior year, you will complete a senior synthesis project that demonstrates a thorough understanding of the field on a topic of your choice. Some students base their senior synthesis projects on Seattle University research experiences.
Hands-On Lab Experiences
Starting with your first course in our department, our curriculum provides a wide variety of biology experiences in the field and lab. Over 90% of biology courses have a lab component that is led by a faculty member.
Research Internships, Fellowships & Field Opportunities
Biology faculty collaborate with students on research projects on a range of issues. Located in the bustling research hub that is Seattle, our program gives you many internship and field opportunities to learn science and make discoveries.
Academic Excellence for Career Success
Our program helps you develop the skills in critical thinking, quantitative problem-solving and scientific research that provides the foundation for success in your career.
Our commitment to undergraduate education means you get high-quality faculty-led instruction in every course.
With the help of your faculty adviser, you can tailor your coursework to meet your educational and post-graduation goals.
Hear From Our Alumni
Tsehay Abebe, BS in Cell and Molecular Biology '13
“I chose biology because I am interested in how the body works...from my undergraduate experience at SU and working at Pacific Northwest Research Institute, I have fallen in love with two aspects of scientific research: solving the mystery and applying it in a clinical setting.”
