In addition to your existing financial aid, there are many scholarships available to help students defray the costs of studying abroad. You are encouraged to visit each award's respective site for eligibility criteria and deadlines.
SU's Education Abroad Office offers scholarships to students participating in programs affiliated with SU (SU-Sponsored, SU-Exchange, and SU Faculty-Led).
- Education Abroad International Humanitarian Scholarship - Up to $2000 for SIT, MSID, and French-in-France and Africa programs
- Education Abroad Need-Based Scholarship
In addition to EAO and partner institutions’ need-based aid, there are other national scholarships for students with demonstrated financial need.
- Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship - up to $5,000 for Federal Pell Grant recipients. Students studying a Critical Need Language are eligible for up to $8,000
- Freeman Asia - For Pell Grant Recipients studying in Asia
- Fund for Education Abroad - up to $10,000 to students with demonstrated financial need, preference to students of diverse backgrounds
These are scholarships through the U.S. State Department for U.S. citizens studying critical-need languages as part of their studies abroad.
- Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship - for Pell Grant Recipients, provides up to an additional $3000 for study of a critical-need language
- David L. Boren Scholarship - up to $25,000
- Critical Language Scholarship - fully-funded summer language program
- Critical Language Scholarship Spark – fully-funded online language program
This list includes both national and program-specific scholarship for particular underrepresented student populations.
- Diversity Abroad Study Overseas Ambassador program - $500 scholarship to students participating in a program through one of Diversity Abroad’s partner organizations
- Fund for Education Abroad Rainbow Scholarship - up to $10,000 awarded to deserving lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) students who aim to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs
- Gilman-McCain Scholarship – up to $5000 for child and spousal dependents of active or activated United States military personnel
- API Diversity Scholarship - up to $750 to students identifying as a military veteran, a non-traditional student, a student with a disability, a minority student, and/or a LGBTQ student
- API First Generation Scholarship - up to $750 to first-generation in college students participating in an API program
- API STEM Scholarship - up to $750 to students majoring in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering, or mathematics) participating in an API program
- API Student-Athlete Scholarship - up to $750 to student athletes participating in an API program
- CIEE Douglass-O'Connell Global Internship – fully-funded summer program for students of color focused on the study of social justice leadership in America, South Africa, and Ireland
- IES David Porter Need-Based Diversity Scholarship - created for African American students, $5,000 off the cost of an IES Abroad program
- Point Foundation’s National LGBT Scholarship Fund - scholarships for students who are marginalized due to sexual orientation, gender identity and/or gender expression
- Pride Foundation - scholarships for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender (LGBT) and straight-allied students
- USAC First Generation Scholarship - up to $1,000 to first-generation in college students participating in a USAC program
- USAC Military Service Scholarship - up to $1,000 to active or veteran status participating in a USAC program
- USAC Science, Technology, Math, and Engineering (STEM) Scholarship - up to $1,000 to STEM majors and minors participating in a USAC Program
