Department of Philosophy
We are a community of inquirers who reflect on fundamental questions of human existence through engaging with Philosophy’s diverse traditions and major thinkers.
Philosophy at Seattle University
The Department of Philosophy invites you into a dynamic intellectual community where students and faculty engage with the deepest questions about human existence, ethics, knowledge, and reality. Our department fosters a collaborative environment where you’ll explore the rich traditions of philosophical thought, from ancient to contemporary, while developing your own critical perspectives.
Philosophy students at Seattle University are encouraged to question assumptions, engage in thoughtful debate, and cultivate an “examined life.” Through courses that challenge your thinking and expand your worldview, you will hone skills in critical analysis, logical reasoning, and articulate expression—tools that are invaluable in today’s world.

Ella Devries
My experience in the SU Philosophy Department was absolutely incredible. I discovered my passion for studying Philosophy somewhat unexpectedly through the Honors Department and I’m so grateful that I decided to pursue it as my major. With so many incredible course offerings and brilliant faculty members, the Philosophy Department completely changed my engagement with my education at SU for the better. I became a better thinker, writer, and student because of my time in the Philosophy Department.
