Mentoring Objectives & Scope
I hope students leave our work together with a clearer sense of what they're good at, what they care about, and how to talk about both with confidence. I bring about 30 years of experience across early startups to BigTech, university teaching, executive coaching, and research on AI ethics and data governance. A lot of that has been about changing direction, so I'm especially useful to students who are unsure of their path, considering a pivot, or interested in how technology, ethics, and leadership fit together.
As a certified executive coach, I work through questions more than advice and understand there are many paths toward the same outcome. Students set the agenda for what they want to work on. I bring structure, honest feedback, and questions that sharpen their thinking. Common topics include building expertise and a point of view in a field, communicating with more confidence and presence, navigating career decisions, and writing or speaking publicly about their work. A through-line in my work is making invisible work visible. Many students, especially those whose contributions tend to go unrecognized, benefit from learning to name the value of what they do.
To set expectations: my focus is development, not placement. I'm not the right mentor for job introductions or recruiting connections. I'm a good fit if you want to grow into someone with a clear voice and a strong case for your own work.
The coaching-style, student-driven structure is my guess at how you work. Swap it out if you prefer to set more of the agenda yourself.
As a mentor, I can support students in the following:
- Resume review, interview prep, LinkedIn branding
- Career exploration, matching interests and talents with professions and industries
- Student transition from college to first professional role
- Building technical or subject matter expertise (hard skills)
- Improved communication and interpersonal skills
- Development of leadership skills, confidence, and executive presence
- Expanding a network, building connection, navigating an organization
- Helping entrepreneurial students define a business or product and business plan
- Career Pivot - transition to new role, career, and industry
When and where do you hold meetings with your students?
Hybrid (mix of in-person and virtual) - near West Seattle
Additional Information
I've spent about 30 years moving between big tech, teaching, coaching, and research. I'm happy to talk with students about any of those paths and how to move between them. Much of my work is about making invisible work visible: the labor, judgment, and care that organizations rely on but rarely credit. I'm glad to help students name and communicate the value of their own work, think through careers in data and AI, or figure out how to pair a practitioner career with scholarship.
