Biography
Allison Machlis Meyer earned her BA in English from Lewis and Clark College in Portland, Oregon, her MA in English from the University of Idaho, and her PhD in English with a graduate minor in Gender and Women’s Studies from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
She specializes in early modern literature with emphasis on gender and historiography. She is the author of Telltale Women: Chronicling Gender in Early Modern Historiography (University of Nebraska Press, 2021). She has also published essays in Renaissance Quarterly, Studies in Philology, Medieval and Renaissance Drama in England, Borrowers and Lenders, and Pedagogy. More recently, her research explores the intersections of book history and formations of religious difference through the study of compiled volumes that participate in the cultural construction of political theology and religious race thinking in early modern Europe.
Closer to home, she studies all-female and non-binary cast Shakespeare performances in Seattle. Dr. Meyer’s classes in the English Department include Shakespeare, Early Modern Drama on the Modern Stage, Violent Bodies in English Drama, Encountering Intercultural Literatures, and Senior Synthesis: Cultural Amnesia and Literary Studies. In the Honors Program, she also teaches the seminars Renaissance and Reformation Literature and Foundational Fictions.
