Originally from Shelton, CT (home of the Wiffle Ball!), I attended the School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University as an undergraduate and went to graduate school at the University of Texas at Austin. I teach a range of courses on Latin American and Caribbean history, including History of the Caribbean, History of Cuba, History of Mexico, Colonial Latin America, and Revolution in Latin America. My research explores the social and cultural history of pre-revolutionary Cuba with a particular focus on the experiences of Haitian and British West Indian immigrants. I have published articles in the Journal of Social History, the Journal of Caribbean History, Caribbean Studies, and The Americas, and served as contributing editor for the history of Garveyism in Cuba for Volume XI of The Marcus Garvey and Universal Negro Improvement Association Papers (Duke University Press, 2011). I am working on a book-length manuscript entitled The Strange and Tragic Case of La Niña Cuca: Infanticide, Immigration, and Race in Early Republican Cuba and currently serve as director of the International Studies program at SU.
