Biography

Personal Bio

Dr. Markuly has had an interdisciplinary focus in his teaching and research, with a particular interest in how the human person learns and processes information and experience, particularly in regards to the meaning and purpose of life. He has written extensively about the importance of human meaning-making and purpose-seeking, and his research interests include the ways in which such meaning and purpose does, could and should contribute to leadership roles and social and political movements. Markuly was a newspaper journalist and editor (both in the U.S. and Europe), and a former co-owner of a commercial contracting business, as well as a professional minister and religious educator prior to entering the field of higher education. At the university level, he has directed an international distance education department that operated in 20 states in the U.S., as well as five foreign nations, and has served as the Dean of Seattle University's School of Theology and Ministry. Markuly has been a regular contributor to print, radio and television news, and believes university's need to play a stronger role as public intellectuals.
