Biography
Expertise: Dr. Nora Maza is Associate Professor in Seattle University’s Online Clinical Mental Health Counseling program. As a counseling instructor and supervisor, and a community program facilitator, Dr. Maza’s expertise is in parenting, child abuse prevention, teen leadership, and problematic social media use.
Why I teach in the OCMHC program: I love teaching in OCMHC because it provides me with the opportunity to work closely with and learn from counselors in training from around the country. My goal is to create a safe and trusting online classroom environment where students can share their experiences and take an active role in their learning.
Publications and media: Dr. Maza has presented on the importance of child abuse prevention programs within the community, problematic social media use, and the effects of screen time on children. She has presented at national counseling conferences on topics including enhancing support for single mothers through a psychoeducational counseling group, enhancing community development through vocational empowerment and leadership programming for teenage girls, and healing through empathic understanding.
Dr. Maza leads professional workshops on suicide prevention and risk assessment training and mandated reporting training.
Student interest areas: She loves the process of helping students identify gaps in mental health care and advocating on behalf of marginalized populations within their communities. Dr. Maza is eager to work with students on building and implementing effective counseling programs within their communities.
Education, Instructional Experience, and Credentials:
Dr. Maza received her BA in Psychology from Texas A&M University, and her MS in Counseling and Ph.D. in Counselor Education from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi.
She has taught research evaluation, career counseling, and lifespan at St. Edwards University and numerous counseling courses at Seattle University’s in-person Clinical Mental Health Counseling program.
Dr. Maza is a Licensed Professional Counselor - Associate in Texas, a National Certified Counselor, and trained in the Gottman Method Couples Therapy. She is certified in Digital Learning.
