Seattle University commemorates the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
Justice. Hope. Change. These ideals will take center stage as Seattle University commemorates the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
This year’s theme for the university’s annual MLK celebration, “A King for Our Times,” underscores the timeless impact of Dr. King’s vision in addressing social challenges and how they reverberate even today. Join the campus community in honoring Dr. King this Thursday, January 23, 12:30–1:30 p.m. in Pigott Auditorium. The event, sponsored by the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, will feature keynote speaker Professor Dr. Lerone A. Martin, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Centennial Professor at Stanford University.
This will be a celebration of Dr. King’s legacy, one underscored by equality and justice. As the Civil Rights leader said, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” His message of empowerment and community remains as impactful as ever, inspiring us to build a future rooted in justice and inclusion.
Keynote speaker Dr. Martin will address Dr. King’s enduring legacy and its relevance in facing today’s social challenges. Dr. Martin, a historian, author and professor of religious studies and African American studies, is known for his research on the intersections of religion, race and politics in American history. He has said, “I think of Martin Luther King, Jr. as a conversation partner in our studies of history and in helping us think about the future.”
Dr. Martin’s first book, the award-winning Preaching on Wax: The Phonograph and the Making of Modern African American Religion, tracks the role of the phonograph in shaping African American religion, culture and politics during the first half of the 20th century. The book was the 2015 recipient of the prestigious Frank S. and Elizabeth D. Brewer Prize for outstanding scholarship in religious history by a first-time author from the American Society of Church History.
An advisor on the 2024 PBS documentary series Gospel, Dr. Martin currently serves as Senior Editor of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Papers Project and The Papers of Martin Luther King, Jr. Volume VIII, which will be released later this year. Forthcoming are a nonfiction book and adapted graphic novel about the adolescence and calling of Dr. King.
In addition to Dr. Martin’s keynote, the program will include readings from some of Dr. King’s most inspiring works, a musical performance and a post-event gathering with light refreshments. Be part of this annual event that will provide opportunities to reflect, connect and draw inspiration for building a more inclusive society.
