About Graduate Advising
Graduate students can benefit from both academic and non-academic advising.
Academic advising provides insight specific to your educational and career goals and is offered through individual programs in partnership with faculty advisors. Learn more about advising for specific programs below.
Non-academic advising offers support for such topics as financial aid, student visa regulations, student life and more. Please contact the appropriate office with your inquiries.
Academic Advising by Program Guide:
Certificate in Computer Science Fundamentals
Advising Contact: CSFundamentals@seattleu.edu
- Students may be eligible to waive certain courses through prior accredited coursework. Please prepare your course descriptions and syllabi for waiver discussions.
- MSCS Bridge: Students begin the MSCS bridge process in the third or fourth quarter of their program. Incoming certificate students are not required to take any action on the bridge process.

Master of Science in Computer Science
Advising Contact: MSCSDegrees@seattleu.edu
- Faculty advisors are assigned to new students 3-4 weeks before the start of their first quarter.
- The MSCS program can be completed in as little as 5 academic quarters.
- Students are required to have the preparatory courses from the Course Catalog cleared by an advisor before they can register for courses. This process is typically completed automatically. If your preparatory courses have not been cleared, please contact MSCSDegrees@seattleu.edu.
- Enrolled students are eligible to switch to a different MSCS specialization during the program. Please note that switching may increase the time to graduation.
Note: The data science specialization requires completion of Calculus III for admission. The software engineering specialization has no additional admission requirements.
Master of Science in Data Science

- Faculty advisors are assigned to new students in early September.
- The MSDS program can be completed in as little as 6 academic quarters.
- Students interested in a part-time program should contact the department to discuss their best course schedule.
Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering
Advising Contact: ME@seattleu.edu
- The MSME program director, Josh Hamel, PhD, is the primary faculty advisor.
- The MSME program can be completed in as little as 4 academic quarters, though most students complete it in 5-6 quarters.
Master of Science in Structural Engineering
Advising Contact: StructuralEngineering@seattleu.edu
- The MSST program director, J. Paul Smith, PhD, is the primary faculty advisor.
- The MSST program can be completed in as little as 6 academic quarters.
- Courses in this program are offered on a rotating 6-quarter schedule.
