Dear Seattle University Community,

With Earth Month upon us, we prepare to celebrate two milestones that are meaningful for Seattle University—the 55th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22 followed by the 10-year anniversary of Laudato Si’, Pope Francis’ encyclical on integral ecology, in May.

At Seattle University, environmental justice and sustainability isn't just a goal—it's at the heart of our Jesuit mission—and these anniversaries remind us of our shared and sacred responsibility to care for our common home, to use the pope’s words. Our Laudato Si' Action Platform commitment, a goal within the Reignited Strategic Directions, calls us to address sustainability in the holistic spirit of integral ecology by introducing sustainability and climate change into our curriculum, reducing our environmental footprint as an institution, operating in a socially responsible manner and fostering a deeper engagement with our communities.

In marking these important milestones, we are invited to reflect upon and renew our shared commitment to this planet and to one another.

Respectfully,

Eduardo M. Peñalver
President
