New Federal Travel Ban and Support for Non-Citizen Community Members

Yesterday, the Trump administration announced a new travel ban that will significantly impact individuals from several countries and could potentially affect members of our campus community.

Dear Seattle University Community,

Yesterday, the Trump administration announced a new travel ban that will significantly impact individuals from several countries and could potentially affect members of our campus community. The policy takes effect on Monday, June 9, and suspends entry for citizens from 12 countries, with limited exceptions. Additionally, it imposes heightened restrictions on citizens from seven other countries. This decision follows the recent announcement that the administration will revoke student visas from an unspecified number of international students from China.

In moments like this, I want to reaffirm Seattle University’s unwavering commitment to our international students, faculty, and staff. You are essential members of our academic community. We stand with you in the face of this uncertainty and will continue to support you in every way possible.

We recognize this latest announcement may cause additional concern, anxiety, and confusion for those who could be directly affected. I want to remind all international students, faculty, and staff of the support and resources available to you. Given the evolving nature and uncertainty of these latest federal actions, we advise those who may be impacted to avoid international travel at this time.

Seattle University is deeply committed to fostering a diverse, inclusive, and welcoming environment – one that values every member of our campus community. This commitment is rooted in our Jesuit, Catholic educational mission and our belief in the dignity of every person. We remain steadfast in support of our non-citizen students, faculty, and staff during these challenging times.

Please do not hesitate to reach out to the International Student and Scholar Center, Human Resources, and other offices listed on our Federal Executive Actions resource page, where you will find guidance and contacts for further support.

Respectfully,

Eduardo M. Peñalver
President
