Center Message April 2023

April 2, 2023

We are in a time of radical rhetoric focused on the erasure of histories and whole people. Book banning and academic censure is rapidly becoming an American norm. Forces are moving to normalize oppressive legalities meant to stop any progressive advancements toward equality and equanimity. The center of ecumenical and interreligious engagement seeks to reclaim the virtues of our moral voice of our highest human values as central to the work of this center and our newsletter this month upholds that endeavor with each article. Our team has drawn from diverse voices committed to the betterment of our world toward a more just and human society.

Our Spring Workshop, Leading by Centering the Margins, begins this month, with its first date on Thursday, April 27, and a second session on Thursday, May 25. You can register for this workshop series at the CEIE website seattleu.edu/thecenter, or directly through our April Newsletter.

Are you a leader in your community? CEIE is cohosting Jonathan Greenblatt, CEO of the Anti-Defamation League, the world’s leading anti-hate organization with a distinguished record of fighting antisemitism and advocating for just and fair treatment to all. Follow the April Newsletter links to register through our long- time partner, Temple de Hirsch Sinai, at the Clergy Institute for Interfaith Learning.

We'd like to highlight a podcast with Mia Baumgartner this month on the Religica Theolab, reviewing the book: “Compassionomics” and the revolutionary importance of care as a core value.
The CEIE Religica Theolab Interfaith Sharing Series presents our third Dharma Talk, this time with Zen Master Jeong Ji-Anita Feng. We gather on Friday, April 21, 2023. Follow the links in the newsletter and register today.

Our Religious Literacy Canvas Course, a non-credit bearing multi-media course created in collaboration with the Parliament of the World’s Religions, arrives in May. You can find more in the newsletter!

We provide three timely articles from The Interfaith Observer in April once again...take a look! And, The Interfaith Observer's next issue for the spring arrives in May.

As you can see the imprint of justice runs throughout this month's newsletter with an eye particular to lifting every voice. James Weldon Johnson gifted the world with this appropriate language that admonishes us to give equal consideration to all people and their stories. At the Center we believe in freedom must earnestly contend for this vision of a world with space and place for all. Our hope is that as you engage this newsletter you will find a treasure that stirs your hope, lifts your spirit, and empowers your action.
