Counseling Department
The College of Education is home to the Department of Counseling. Students can specialize in Clinical Mental Health Counseling or School Counseling as they earn their Master of Arts in Education degree. Both specializations can be completed in-person (currently CACREP accredited) OR online (currently working towards CACREP accreditation).
Our Mission
The Seattle University Counseling Department is committed to preparing ethical, self-aware counselors devoted to social justice, equity, and anti-racism. We develop students’ multicultural and social justice competence to ensure an understanding of systemic oppression that will help them advocate with and for marginalized communities. Our graduates are change agents that promote justice and foster individual and collective wellbeing through their integrity, reflective practice, and sustained efforts addressing inequities in their counseling.

Our Programs
Our counseling program offers two different specializations, including Clinical Mental Health Counseling and School Counseling. Each specialization has two delivery types: in-person and online asynchronous.
Located in Seattle, Washington, our in-person Clinical Mental Health specialization is CACREP accredited.
Completing this program prepares graduates for:
- Licensure in the State of Washington as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor
- Washington State Substance Use Disorder Certification
This online asynchronous Clinical Mental Health Counseling specialization is currently going through the CACREP accreditation process. The online program requires a four day summer intensive in Seattle, WA prior to starting the program.
Completing this program prepares graduates for:
- Licensure in the State of Washington as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor, as well as other approved states
- Washington State Substance Use Disorder Certification
Located in Seattle, Washington, our in-person School Counseling specialization is CACREP accredited.
Completing this program prepares graduates for:
- Residency level Educational Staff Associate (ESA) Certification in K-12 settings, public and private
- Licensure in the State of Washington as a Licensed Mental Health Counselor
- Washington State Substance Use Disorder Certification
This online asynchronous School Counseling specialization is currently going through the CACREP accreditation process. The online program requires a four day summer intensive in Seattle, WA prior to starting the program.
