Cost of Attendance & Financial Need
Federal law requires colleges and universities to provide students with the Cost of Attendance (COA), which is the total estimated price to attend for one academic year and is used to determine a student's eligibility for financial aid. To prepare a student's financial aid offer, the Student Financial Services Office subtracts the Student Aid Index (SAI) as calculated from the information provided on the student's FAFSA, from the estimated cost of attendance, often referred to as the student budget, to determine financial need.
The COA includes both direct and indirect costs incurred during the academic year. Direct costs are billed through the student account at Seattle University, such as tuition, fees, housing and meal plans. Indirect costs are expenses students aren't billed for by Seattle U but are paid by the student such as transportation, books, supplies, loan fees and personal expenses. Students will not be billed for housing and meals if they are not utilizing those services.
The following are sample student budgets for the nine-month academic year for full-time, undergraduate students, enrolled for 12–18 credits.
| Budget Category | 2025-26 Undergraduate Student Living On or Off Campus |
2025-26 Undergraduate Student Living With Parents or Relatives |
|---|---|---|
| Tuition | $57,825 | $57,825 |
| Books & supplies | $660 | $660 |
| Technology Fee | $624 | $624 |
| Wellness Fee | $516 | $516 |
| Housing | $10,440 | $2,940 |
| Food | $6,180 | $2,940 |
| Loan Fee | $65 | $65 |
| Personal Expenses | $1,908 | $1,908 |
| Transportation | $1,710 | $1,710 |
| Total Budget | $79,928 | $69,188 |
After financial need has been determined, Student Financial Services prepares a financial aid offer, including as much aid as the student is eligible to receive within the constraints of both the student's need and the availability of funding. Depending on a student's eligibility, a financial aid offer will include one, some, or all of the following types of aid: scholarships and/or grants, work opportunities and loans.
A student can see their costs after financial aid on the financial aid offer letter by accessing it through the Financial Aid Self Service portal via mySeattleU online.
