Biography

Dr. Rodney Perkins is a post-graduate nurse-midwifery student and a recent graduate of the University of Washington School of Nursing, where he obtained his PhD in Nursing Science. As part of his dissertation, Dr. Perkins worked for the DoxyPEP Study, a randomized clinical trial of doxycycline post-exposure prophylaxis (doxy-PEP) to reduce bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among men who have sex with men (MSM) and use antiretrovirals (ARTs) for HIV treatment or prevention. His research interest focuses on advancing the prevention of HIV and other sexually transmitted infections, particularly among MSM and cisgender women.

Before his post-graduate work, Dr. Perkins was the director of the Gay Men’s Health and Wellness Clinic (GMHC) at Whitman-Walker Health in Washington, DC, the largest provider of HIV/STI testing, counseling, and treatment services in the nation’s capital. He also held a faculty post in the College of Nursing and Allied Health at Howard University, teaching adult and maternal-infant health nursing.

He has a bachelor’s and master’s degree in nursing from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in Baltimore, MD. He also has a Master of Public Health degree in Epidemiology from the George Washington University School of Public Health in Washington, DC.
