Welcome to our resource page for Advanced Practice Preceptors at the College of Nursing and Health Sciences. 

Thank you to our preceptors and community partners for your dedication to educating our nurse practitioner students. Your guidance provides our Advanced Practice students with meaningful learning experiences that enrich their education and professional growth. We recognize that your time is valuable and appreciate your willingness to engage our students in their nurse practitioner role and skill development. We couldn’t do this important work without you.

What are the qualifications to be a preceptor?

  • Preparation at the appropriate level of current practice and a minimum of (1) one- year experience in current role.
  • Current license in good standing in the state of practice as an MD (Medical Doctor), DO (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine), ARNP (Nurse Practitioner), or PA (Physician Assistant), PhD, PsyD Psychologists for assessment and counseling training (PMHNP students only).

What are the general responsibilities and expectations for the preceptor?

  • Provide the clinical placement staff with your resume and credentials
  • Work with the student to schedule hours that match your work schedule
  • Mentor nurse practitioner students on their journey from novice to competence (typically 150 hours per quarter)
  • Provide the supervising faculty feedback on student performance

As an SU preceptor you have access to continuing education credits on topics to enhance your practice. 

  • Participation in CE programs at Seattle University
  • CE credits towards national recertification 

Preceptors for Seattle University are eligible for Affiliate Faculty appointments which comes with the following benefits:

Submit a DNP Project Idea

Are you interested in working with Seattle University DNP students on a Process or Practice Improvement project at your organization?

Students typically work on their projects over the full academic year with planning in the summer/fall, implementation in the winter and evaluation in the spring. 

Students can work on a variety of projects such as:

  • Program planning or evaluation
  • Quality safety initiative or improvement
  • Evaluating outcomes from practice innovations and/or changes
  • Needs assessment and recommendations
  • Evaluate new models of care
