Diversity and Inclusion Resources

The Office of Diversity and Inclusion embraces an intersectional framework of equity, defining diversity and inclusion broadly. ODI envisions a welcome, open and inclusive campus climate for all who learn, live and work at Seattle University.  These resources are intended to support that vision. They are not exhaustive or comprehensive; rather they're intended as a starting point for engaging with important topics.

Campus Resources

Seattle University offers a wealth of entry points for accessing resources. The offices and departments listed below are accessible to the entire university community, and can assist in identifying next steps where the path forward may be unclear.

Office of Institutional Equity

The Office of Institutional Equity is part of the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion. Concerns of discrimination or harassment may be reported to Assistant Vice President Elizabeth Trayner at the OIE. This centralized resource is available to all faculty, staff, and students.

Office of the University Ombudsperson

The University Ombudsperson, Sue Theiss, provides informal, independent, impartial, and confidential conflict management services to all employees of the university.

Identity-Based Resources

Resources for Members of Identity Groups and Communities.

Seattle University celebrates and honors all those with Asian American and Pacific Islander heritage, at our campus and around the world.

The term "Asian American and Pacific Islander" is officially designated, but the term is inadequate to encompass a myriad different countries, communities, and cultures. However you identify, we honor and affirm each member of each community for their unique and multifaceted story.

Seattle University honors and affirms the rich, vibrant, and diverse diaspora that is the
Black community. Black members of both the University community and Seattle as a whole have contributed to the vibrancy of the Pacific Northwest for generations.

In the face of ongoing attempts throughout the country to silence Black voices and experiences, we seek to amplify and support.

We use the term "Hispanic and Latin American," as it is officially designated, while realizing that no single term can encompass the wide and vibrant range of cultures, identities, and experiences, with connections to Mexico, the Caribbean, Central America, South America, and the many Indigenous Nations and people that preceded these.

We honor and celebrate all of these members of our community.

Seattle University affirms and recognizes the deep ancestry, rich culture, and sacred traditions of Indigenous People. We celebrate the immense contributions of Native people and their origin story in the complex history of our region and country. Seattle University also recognizes and reflects on the oppression and systemic challenges that have been placed on Indigenous communities throughout our nation’s history and still present today.

It is crucial that we continuously acknowledge that Seattle University is positioned on the homelands of the Coast Salish peoples, who continue to steward these lands and waters as they have since time immemorial. We recognize tribal nations and organizations who actively create, shape, and contribute to our thriving community at Seattle University and beyond.

Seattle University celebrates and honors all individuals who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community. We recognize the extraordinary strength and achievements of this community. Rights for the members of this community are under continuous attack throughout the nation and the world. In this climate, it is imperative that Seattle U continues to be a place where each person can live and realize their full truth.

We are dedicated to educating the whole person, and to empowering leaders for a just and humane world. Religious inclusion involves supporting each individual's faith journey, fostering inter-religious dialogue in the spirit of connection and growth, and sustaining a multi-faith environment.

Information to provide initial guidance in practicing religious inclusion can be downloaded here: Starting Resources for Religious Inclusion.
