OUR PURPOSE

The purpose of The Division of Mission Integration is to empower the diverse community of Seattle University, to holistically engage, advance, and animate our Jesuit Catholic mission, vision, and values into every aspect of our life and work as an institution. We invite all to understand, engage, and embody the richness of the Ignatian tradition through:

  • Implementation: We implement diverse and impactful formation opportunities designed for all members of the university community, fostering a deeper connection to our Jesuit Catholic heritage in constant dialogue with our concrete realities.
  • Partnership: We partner with individuals, departments, and organizations across campus to collaboratively integrate mission-aligned initiatives and educational priorities.
  • Support: We support ongoing learning and development that empowers students, faculty, and staff to deepen their understanding and experience of the Ignatian way of proceeding.
  • Sponsorship: We sponsor programs and events that enrich our campus culture, embodying our core values and fostering a commitment to justice and care.
  • Consultation: We consult on strategies and practices that effectively weave the Jesuit Catholic mission into daily work, academic pursuits, and spiritual formation.

HOW WE SERVE THE UNIVERSITY

We advance and support the work of anchoring Seattle University in its Jesuit and Catholic character by:

ANIMATING AN IGNATIAN WAY OF PROCEEDING ON CAMPUS

An Ignatian way of proceeding is one grounded in the charism and spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola. Rooted in The Spiritual Exercises, this way of proceeding centers love as the foundation, while pursuing something more, with constant attention to the person(s) before us. The gives Seattle University a campus culture that fosters within our students, faculty, staff, and leaders a commitment to personal responsibility, compassion, forgiveness, respect, a habit of reflection, and holistic understanding of mind, body, and soul.

EMBODYING AND CULTIVATING A CULTURE OF CARE

A hallmark of Jesuit education is the cura personalis we embody and cultivate for everyone in the University community. In The Spiritual Exercises, St. Ignatius pays particular attention to the emotional, physical, and spiritual well being of people. Seattle University embodies and cultivates a culture of care that continues that tradition with attention to holistic growth, respect for others, creating community and support, and underscoring the value of self-care.

CREATING SPACES TO ENCOUNTER THE DIVINE

Whether the space is a building like our architecturally award winning Chapel of St. Ignatius; quiet, reflective opportunities like retreats; prayerful moments like vigils or liturgies; or conversations with others seeking to find the good in ourselves, others, and the world, Mission Integration creates spaces and ways to encounter the Divine. Respectful of the breadth and depth of ways people experience the spiritual and transcendent, space, time, and attention is given for the Divine to be present and at work in our lives.

PROMOTING A FAITH THAT SEEKS AND DOES JUSTICE

A Faith that Seeks and Does Justice grounds active engagement in addressing social inequities, inequalities, and issues in a spiritual foundation that animates the work. Love, compassion, and the human dignity we show with and for others leads us to acts of service, charity, advocacy, education, empowerment, and deep abiding systemic change.
