Evolving Our Parking System with Care and Clarity

We’re reaching out with important updates about parking enforcement on the SU First Hill campus. We know parking can be a source of stress and confusion, and we’re committed to listening, improving, and making the system work better for everyone.

In line with our Jesuit values—and our shared commitment to transparency, equity, and care for the whole person—Seattle University is partnering with Impark to support parking patrols beginning this summer. This transition allows us to deliver more consistent service and more effective use of campus resources, while staying focused on serving our students, faculty, staff, and guests with compassion and clarity.

What you need to know…

A Permit Is Always Required

Parking on campus requires a valid Seattle U permit at all times, including weekends, holidays, and breaks. We know your situation may vary, and we encourage you to reach out if you’re uncertain about your status—we’re here to help.

Valid permits include:

  • Pre-paid daily, monthly, quarterly, or semester permits (via iParq)
  • Activated Orca Flex permits (note: permits must be activated at the time of parking; retroactive activation via email to parking services is not possible)
  • Active sessions in PayByPhone
  • Printed permits from Ventech Machines (Murphy or Pigott lots)
  • Valid guest passes submitted by SU departments (Drivers are responsible for registering their vehicle before parking)

Reserved Spaces Are Assigned

Reserved spaces marked “Reserved” or “Assigned” are for specific individuals or units. Parking in these spaces without permission may result in citation or towing.

You Are Your Own Best Advocate

Each of us has a role to play in making the system work. Please ensure your permit is valid and active for each day you park. A quick double-check can prevent unnecessary frustration or fees.

Appeals Process for Clear Errors Only

If a citation is issued due to an enforcement error (e.g., license plate misread), you are welcome to submit an appeal. However, appeals will not be approved for incomplete or forgotten actions (e.g., “I forgot to activate” or “I didn’t know the rules”).

Beginning this summer, all appeals will be handled directly through Impark (not the SU Parking Office). Appeal instructions are printed on the back of your citation and posted online.

Updated Citation Fees and Connected to DMV

  • $75 if paid within 7 days
  • $93 if paid after 7 days

Unpaid citations will be sent to a third-party collections agency. Delayed payments may also result in late fees, collection actions, or restrictions on future parking privileges. Fines are billed directly to the registered vehicle owner.

License plates will be checked against the Contracted Plate Service and the owner of a cited vehicle will be sent a collection notice and be held responsible for the payment.

Renew Early to Avoid Citations

Permit renewals can sneak up on all of us. Please set a reminder to purchase or renew your permit in advance. You can check your status anytime in your SU Parking Portal.

Why Impark?

Partnering with Impark allows SU to:

  • Improve consistency and reduce manual errors
  • Focus staff time on service and system upgrades
  • Prevent unauthorized use of campus spaces

This shift supports our strategic goals to enhance operational efficiency and deliver a better user experience for our campus community.

Towing Policy

Towing is rare, but necessary in certain cases. A vehicle may be towed if it:

  • Has 3 or more unpaid citations
  • Is parked in No Parking/ADA zones without proper credentials
  • Occupies a reserved/ assigned space without authorization

We will always try to avoid escalation—please reach out early if you’re concerned about a potential issue.

Let’s Keep Learning and Improving Together

Parking isn't just about enforcement—it's about how we share space, show respect, and care for one another. We will continue to adapt and improve our system based on your feedback, experiences, and evolving needs. We are committed to learning, listening, and evolving with humility and purpose.
