Joining in Mourning the Passing of Pope Francis
Today, we join people around the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, and we reflect on the enduring impact he had on our lives, on Seattle University, and on the global community.
Dear Seattle University Community,
Today, we join people around the world in mourning the passing of Pope Francis, and we reflect on the enduring impact he had on our lives, on Seattle University, and on the global community. He was a beacon of compassion and unwavering faith, whose leadership and vision inspired countless individuals to strive for a more just and humane world. His profound humility and personal sanctity have stood in quiet contrast with so many other world leaders who have entered and exited the world stage during his twelve years as the leader of the Catholic Church.
As the first Jesuit and the first Latin American pope, Francis dedicated his life to serving the poor, to advocating for justice, and to fostering a greater spirit of inclusivity, love, and mutual understanding within our Church and in the wider culture. He challenged us to recognize our common humanity, urging us to care for the marginalized, to protect the environment, and to live out our faith through acts of kindness and service. He had a special love for migrants and refugees.
His teachings and actions have left an indelible mark on our hearts and on Seattle University. As a Jesuit, Catholic university, we feel a deep connection to Pope Francis’ mission and values. His encyclical letter, Laudato Si, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, has provided the roadmap for our efforts to accompany our students towards a more hope-filled and sustainable future.
In this time of sorrow, let us come together as a community to honor Pope Francis and his works and continue his mission of promoting peace, justice, and reconciliation. We will join with the Church Universal in a traditional nine-day mourning period. Over these next nine days at the Chapel of St. Ignatius, the Mass intentions at the weekday 12:30 p.m. and Sunday 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. will be for the repose of the soul of Pope Francis. On the final day, Wednesday, April 30, we will have a special Mass at 12:30 p.m. in thanksgiving for the life and pontificate of Pope Francis. All are welcome. I invite you to join us in paying tribute to a remarkable leader who touched the lives of many.
May we find comfort in our shared grief and strength in our collective commitment to uphold the principles Pope Francis so passionately advocated.
With deepest sympathy,
Eduardo M. Peñalver
