Dear Seattle University Community,
Seattle University joins communities across the nation today in observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day, a time to honor and celebrate the histories, cultures, traditions, and continuing contributions of Indigenous peoples. We are grateful for the knowledge, leadership, and cultural richness that Indigenous students, faculty, staff, alumni, and community members bring to our campus and the wider community.
It is important to note that this year marks the 10th anniversary of Seattle University’s recognition of Indigenous Peoples’ Day. The university's decision to observe the day in 2016 was shaped by the efforts of many members of our community, including the Native American Law Students Association, whose engagement helped advance this important recognition.
For us, as a Jesuit university located on the ancestral lands of the Coast Salish peoples, Indigenous Peoples’ Day is particularly resonant. As we acknowledge the rich and living traditions of those who were here first, we also must confront the painful history of atrocities and injustices to which Indigenous peoples have been subjected. Our mission and values challenge us to be a force for healing and reconciliation and to build a more just and humane world. We are fortunate to be guided in this continuing work by campus partners, including the Indigenous Peoples Institute, the Northwest Center for Indigenous Law in the School of Law, and other groups and student-led clubs.
In observing Indigenous Peoples’ Day, let us take time to learn, reflect, and engage with the histories and contemporary experiences of Indigenous peoples, and through education, dialogue, and action, may we continue to foster a campus community grounded in respect and inclusion.
Sincerely,
