Altar Platform

Table of the Eucharist

The Table of the Eucharist is the focal point of Christian unity and identity. The altar is constructed of Alaskan yellow cedar with a reddened bronze base. There is a reliquary in the base that contains relics of St. Francis Xavier, St. Robert Bellarmine, St. Edmund Campion, (the namesakes of the three student residence halls on campus) and St. Ignatius of Loyola, the chapels patron saint. The altar sits atop a platform, affording good visibility for those in the congregation. A light patina with preservative coating has been added to the gold leaf behind the altar.

Ambo

The ambo is the place from which the Word of God is proclaimed; it is made of ash and reddened bronze. Early Church writers often referred to this place of proclamation as "the Table of the Word," which reminds worshippers that the Scriptures are food that nourish and sustain the community, the Body of Christ.

The Crucifix

The cross is made of hand-tooled Alaskan cedar, and holds the corpus or representation of the body of Jesus that was part of an older crucifix brought to Seattle University from the Austrian Alps and used in the Campion Chapel for many years.
