For the past 33 years, engineering students at Seattle University have applied their education to real-world application. It’s part of a program with Kenworth in which senior year mechanical and electrical engineers participate in “Capstone” projects with local companies. Capstone enables students to put much of their knowledge to work in an academic year-long class to create something tangible that one day might be commercially produced.

The future of artificial intelligence (AI) is here: self-driving cars, grocery-delivering drones and voice assistants like Alexa that control more and more of our lives, from the locks on our front doors to the temperatures of our homes.
But as AI permeates everyday life, what about the ethics and morality of the systems? For example, should an autonomous vehicle swerve into a pedestrian or stay its course when facing a collision?
These questions plague technology companies as they develop AI at a clip outpacing government regulation, and have led Seattle University to develop a new ethics course for the public.

Facing unprecedented enrollment demand in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) disciplines over the past decade, Seattle U is starting construction this summer on a new five-story, 111,000-square foot building with a price tag of $100 million. The CSI, located at the corner of 12th Avenue and East Marion Street, is being called a “gateway” to the 50-acre campus and is scheduled to open in 2021. Two renovated buildings will follow in 2023.

At the 2019 Washington GIS Conference, The Seattle University Sound Transit team competed and won second place in the Dick Thomas Award. The team is comprised of civil and electrical engineering students, and they worked on an Interactive Noise Map Application (INMA) for Customer Access to Light Rail Noise Data.

PACCAR, a long-term partner with Seattle U's Project Center and their Sponsor Liaisons Jerry Ross and Danny Baldwin worked with students Keoni Akina, Oshian Coates, Dai Nguyen, Kayz Nguyen, Ashley White and Faculty Advisor Shiny Abraham Ph.D on Phase II of a semi-truck to trailer communication system that allows truck drivers to respond to critical situations that occur in their attached trailer.
