Biography

Julie Homchick Crowe is an Assistant Professor in the Communication and Media Department at Seattle University who specializes in rhetorical studies, critical media studies, and science and technology studies. Her research focuses on the ways in which health and science discourse reflect political ideologies, particularly in the areas of infectious disease, health and wellness, and human biology. Her work appears in The Journal of Medical Humanities, Rhetoric of Health and Medicine, Environmental Communication, The Project on Rhetoric of Inquiry, Science & Education and other outlets. Current projects of hers focus on the intersections of nationalism and health discourse, the rhetorical lineage of germ theory denialism, and lines of argument in cases of science denialism.

Dr. Crowe teaches broadly across her discipline and in the university core, teaching courses in rhetorical studies, persuasion, public speaking, health communication, scientific controversies, environmental communication, professional communication, service-learning courses, and communication research. Prior to working at Seattle University, she earned her PhD at the University of Washington and held positions at Dartmouth College, the University of Puget Sound, and Western Washington University.
