Spiritual Practice and the Sacramental Imagination

Wednesday, May 22

5-6pm in LeRoux (STCN 160)

Prior to the lecture, join the campus community at the reception thanking Fr. Lucas for his service at SU. The reception is also in LeRoux, from 3:30-5pm. All are welcome.

Sacraments, the ancient catechisms told us, are outward signs, image-filled actions and rituals that convey God’s grace to our broken world.  As a scholar of art and religion, Fr. Tom Lucas S.J., retiring Jesuit rector of Arrupe House and curator of the Seattle University Art Collection, will sketch out how the sacramental imagination functions in the Catholic tradition, using our iconic Chapel of St. Ignatius as his canvas. Father Lucas will combine light, architecture, music, and poetry on a spring evening reflection on how God uses matter to teach us, beauty to heal us, and inspiration to move us through our imaginations and beyond our earthbound limitations.

6:30pm Reception – all are welcome

7-8:30pm in LeRoux (Student Center 160)

Join us for an evening with author Frank Fromherz, as he speaks about his latest book.

“History will likely reveal Raymond Hunthausen as one of the most courageous voices in late 20th century U.S. Catholicism, and no one better describes the Seattle archbishop’s prophetic role than Frank Fromherz… This is more than a biography. It is a study of moral character, a carefully researched portrait of one man’s journey toward faithfulness and integrity.” - Fr. John Heagle and Sr. Fran Ferder, founders of Therapy and Renewal Associates
