Spiritual Practice and the Sacramental Imagination

Prior to the lecture, join the campus community at the reception thanking Fr. Lucas for his service at SU. The reception is also in LeRoux, from 3:30-5pm. All are welcome.

Sacraments, the ancient catechisms told us, are outward signs, image-filled actions and rituals that convey God’s grace to our broken world.  As a scholar of art and religion, Fr. Tom Lucas S.J., retiring Jesuit rector of Arrupe House and curator of the Seattle University Art Collection, will sketch out how the sacramental imagination functions in the Catholic tradition, using our iconic Chapel of St. Ignatius as his canvas. Father Lucas will combine light, architecture, music, and poetry on a spring evening reflection on how God uses matter to teach us, beauty to heal us, and inspiration to move us through our imaginations and beyond our earthbound limitations.

Co-hosted with the Black Catholic Advisory Circle of the Archdiocese of Seattle

The Mass and celebration are an ongoing acknowledgement of our call to discipleship which draws Catholics of all backgrounds from around the Archdiocese. This Mass will not only celebrate the memory of Dr. King, but will inspire us to continue in unity to stand up for justice. Our guest speaker will be author, radio and former television host, Deacon Arthur L. Miller. Deacon Miller is a certified trainer in Dr. King’s nonviolence philosophy as well as a Certified Spiritual Director and is a board member for Connecticut Center for Nonviolence.

Memorial Mass for Raymond Hunthausen

Tuesday, October 9 at 7pm in the Chapel of St. Ignatius with a reception following

Seattle University will commemorate the historic pastoral ministry of Raymond Hunthausen, archbishop of Seattle, 1975-1991, with a Memorial Mass on October 9 at 7 p.m. in the Chapel of St. Ignatius. Fr. Pat Howell, SJ, will be the celebrant. Father Howell was dean of the School of Theology and Ministry when Hunthausen Hall was named after this strong ecumenical leader. Archbishop Hunthausen also inaugurated a joint program in 1985 with Seattle University for the training for lay pastoral leaders in the Church.  All are welcome to join in the celebration of his life and ministry. Co-sponsored with SU's School of Theology and Ministry.

Join with Christians worldwide to commemorate the Season of Creation, the time between September 1 (World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation) and October 4 (feast day of St. Francis of Assisi). We invite all people of faith to celebrate the joy which the Earth shares with us. Let us come together to thank God for the richness that is in the Creation which we share. Father Michael G.
