Dear Students, Faculty and Staff,

I am pleased to announce that Dean Peterson, Associate Professor of Economics in the Albers School of Business and Economics, has been selected as the 2021-2022 recipient of the Reverend James B. McGoldrick, S.J., Fellowship. Father McGoldrick devoted 50 years of distinguished teaching and dedicated service to SU. The fellowship bearing his name is given to faculty who share his commitment to the university’s students and the values of a Jesuit education.

The 2021-2022 McGoldrick Fellow perfectly fits that description. In his 30 years at Seattle University, Dean Peterson has had an immeasurable impact in the lives of countless students. He brings energy and commitment to every class he teaches, whether it is an intro-level course for first-year students and sophomores or a capstone course for seniors. His excellence as a teacher is appreciated not only within the Albers School, but throughout the university as he has been asked to teach courses in other colleges and programs. He has been recognized with several teaching awards and is highly regarded by his students, many of whom credit him with inspiring them to choose economics as a major.

A true citizen of the university, Dean Peterson has served on numerous committees and has participated in important initiatives that contribute to the mission and progress of our university. To name a few examples, he was integrally involved in the university’s process of reimagining the Core Curriculum, has been an active part of the Center for Faculty Development’s work, serves on the Fulbright and Truman committees and is currently Associate Director of the University Honors Program.

He has published and presented widely on a number of topics, including ethics and economics. Not surprisingly, given his dedication to students and teaching, a recent focus of his scholarship has been on pedagogy.

The McGoldrick Fellowship, which includes a one-quarter sabbatical, is the most prestigious honor Seattle University confers upon faculty. Please join me in congratulating Dean Peterson on this well-deserved recognition.
