Provost Shane P. Martin
Dr. Shane P. Martin is the Provost of Seattle University. As Chief Academic Officer, he oversees the Academic and Student Affairs Division, including the seven schools and colleges, the libraries, enrollment management, faculty services, Student and Campus Life, and numerous academic centers and initiatives.
Prior to coming to Seattle University, he served for almost 25 years at Loyola Marymount University (LMU) as a faculty member and administrator, completing 14 years as Dean of the LMU School of Education and 6 as Dean of Graduate Studies. As dean of the LMU School of Education, Shane established the Center for Catholic Education to serve the educational needs of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles to prepare Catholic school teachers and principals, and to conduct research on the L.A. Catholic schools.
Dr. Martin began his educational career as a 7th grade teacher at St. Eugene Catholic School in Los Angeles, CA. Over a 40-year career as an educator, he has taught or served as an administrator in Catholic institutions at all levels from junior high school, high school, undergraduate, master’s and doctoral universities. A nationally renowned speaker on Catholic educational issues, he has led workshops at numerous Catholic high schools and universities. An expert researcher regarding the efficacy of Catholic schools for immigrant and educationally disadvantaged students, Shane was instrumental in establishing the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Special Interest Group (SIG) on Catholic Education, serving as a past chair. He has presented numerous scholarly papers, including those at the National Catholic Educational Association (NCEA), the American Anthropological Association, and the AERA.
An educational anthropologist by training, his areas of expertise include intercultural education, inclusive excellence, educational policy, leadership, and Jesuit education. He has been recognized with numerous awards, including: the INSIGHT Into Diversity Giving Back Diversity Leadership Award, the NCEA’s Michael J. Guerra Leadership Award and the Catherine T. McNamee, CSJ, Award, and the Loyola High School Alumni Association’s Cahalan Award. Dr. Martin is a 2015 fellow of the Pahara-Aspen Education Fellowship, a branch of the Aspen Institute.
Dr. Martin’s published books are: Justice, Care, and Diversity: Addressing the Needs of All Students in Catholic Secondary Schools (NCEA, 2009), with E.F. Litton, Equity, Advocacy and Diversity: New Directions for Catholic Schools (NCEA, 2004), with E.F. Litton, and Cultural Diversity in Catholic Schools: Challenges and Opportunities for Catholic Educators (NCEA, 1996). He has contributed to many peer-reviewed publications on the topics of cultural diversity in Catholic schools, technology and learning, social justice in education, and multicultural education.
Dr. Martin served as a state commissioner to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for 10 years for which he was recognized by a resolution from the California Legislature. He served as a board member and chair of the Green Dot Public Schools Board, chair of the Teach For America Los Angeles Board, and member of the Loyola High School of Los Angeles Board of Directors. He was a founding member of Deans for Impact and is a past president of the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities (AJCU) Education Deans Conference, a past chair of the Association of Graduate Schools in Catholic Colleges and Universities (AGSCCU), and a past member of the Jesuit Schools Network (JSN) Board. Dr. Martin currently serves on the Seattle Preparatory School Board of Directors and is the chair of the AJCU Chief Academic Officers Commission.
Dr. Martin earned his Ph.D. in International and Intercultural Education at the University of Southern California, a Master of Theology degree at the Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University (JST) with a specialization in Hispanic Ministry, a Master of Divinity degree also from JST, and a Bachelor of Arts in History from Loyola Marymount University. He received an honorary doctorate from LMU in 2018.
