Sam Harrell is an Assistant Professor of Social Work at Seattle University. Sam has experience across a range of social service areas, including child welfare, prison and jail re-entry, low-barrier shelter services, LGBTQ+ youth services, violence prevention, crisis intervention, legal advocacy, and harm reduction. Sam's research explores social work's relationship to the carceral state, past and present. Current lines of inquiry include biographical histories of social workers who served as police and prison wardens in the Progressive Era, the evolution of police social work, mandated reporting, and pseudoscience in corrections-based "treatment." Sam is an Editorial Board member at Affilia: Feminist Inquiry in Social Work and Abolitionist Perspectives in Social Work.
