The Office of the Dean of Students is responsible for coordinating the university’s response when a current student or recent alum passes away. When an employee learns of a student death, they should contact Public Safety at 206-296-5911 right away and send an email with all available information to James Willette, Associate Provost and Dean of Students, at email@example.com.
In consultation with the Associate Provost, Campus Ministry, and Counseling and Psychological Services, the Office of the Dean of Students will notify those individuals at the university who need to know about the student’s passing, such as the Dean of the student’s college, the faculty director of their program, and members of the cabinet. The Dean of Students will gather information, coordinate campus notifications, and determine the content of campus announcements in consultation with the student’s family, Campus Ministry, and Counseling and Psychological Services. The Dean of Students will also connect faculty, staff and students who are closely impacted with services and resources. Due to the sensitive nature of these matters, we ask that employees refrain from sending notifications or sharing information about student deaths without coordinating with the Office of the Dean of Students.
