Faculty Onboarding
The College of Arts and Sciences is governed by two primary, co-equal bodies in conjunction with the Dean:
A&S Executive Committee (EC) - Comprised of the Dean, Associate Deans, Chairs, Directors of degree programs not housed within a larger department, and an elected staff representative.
A&S Faculty and Staff Senate (FSS) - Comprised of elected representatives with dedicated positions for staff, tenured/tenure-track faculty, and non-tenure-track faculty in the Arts/Humanities, Social Sciences, Graduate and Professional Programs.
Additional standing committees contribute to the governance and operations of the College of Arts and Sciences.
College governance must adhere to the Bylaws of the College of Arts and Sciences Governance Structure. Bylaws may be amended by vote of the EC and FSS.

Once all new faculty and staff paperwork is turned in and processed, Seattle U email addresses and SU ID numbers will be assigned.
Once you receive your email address and ID number, log on to SUOnline to create your password by clicking on "forgot password" under the Personal Profile menu. On this screen, fill in your user name (your SU email address), your name, SU ID number, and birth date. Choose a password.
The Campus Photo ID Card is your Seattle University
Visit the Campus Card page for details on obtaining your card.
Students, faculty and staff can print to any Managed Print Services (MPS) device on campus through the SU print queue. When you click "print" on your document and send it to the queue, you may go to any machine on campus, swipe your card, and your document will be printed there. You may scan documents for free, but printing and photocopies are charged to the account associated with your card.
If you are a staff or faculty member, you will have the option of charging work-related print jobs to your department's print group. Supervisors must submit a request to the Help Desk by email to add new employees to print groups.

The College of Arts & Sciences’ offices are located in 16 buildings across the campus. The Casey Building, often considered the college’s home base, houses more than 20 A&S departments and programs, the SU ADVANCE grant office, the Dean’s office, and Student Advising Center. Your department may or may not have office or workspace in the Casey building.
Faculty and staff may expect to share workspace in Casey or another building on campus. Your department or program should let you know your assigned workspace location and phone number.
Use of Arts and Sciences dedicated workspaces is determined in consultation with the faculty and staff elected to the A&S Space Committee. Learn about the A&S Space Committee here.

Paydays for salaried exempt staff and faculty are on the 15th and the last workday of each month.
Non-Exempt (Hourly) Staff and Student Employees
Paydays for students, non-exempt, trades, and temporary staff are on the 10th and 25th of each month. Enter hours in “Web Time Entry” via SUOnline.

Faculty and staff receive discounts of 20% on these items when visiting the campus store on 12th and Madison.

RedHawk Center
Faculty and staff employees receive membership to recreational facilities, including the Eisiminger Fitness Center, at no cost to the employee. Partners and dependents may join for a small membership fee. Visit the website.

Employees will find the University’s Sexual Harassment Policy in Section 13.5 and Appendix C of the Human Resources Policy Manual, available here.
All employees are required to take an online Sexual Harassment Training through EngageSU. You will receive an email prompt when you are due to update your training.
FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)
FERPA is an acronym for the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (20 U.S.C. 1232g, 34 CFR § 99). Congress enacted FERPA, also referred to as the "Buckley Amendment," in 1974. FERPA conditions federal educational funding on providing student access to, and maintaining the privacy of, education records. Faculty, staff, administrators and other university officials are required by FERPA to treat education records in a legally specified manner. To access FERPA training, click here.
The university is committed to maintaining a learning and working environment free from discrimination and harassment. This training will promote self-awareness by increasing supervisors' understanding of discrimination and harassment and how to prevent it. It is important to note that the training you will complete is written from a legal perspective. However, Seattle University’s policies, procedures, and practices go beyond the legal requirement to ensure behavior is consistent with our Catholic and Jesuit identity and character.

ProcureSU is the university's Procure-to-Pay system, which automates purchasing, receiving, and payment processing on campus. ALL purchasing and reimbursements are completed through ProcureSU. CLSS is the scheduling software used by chairs, directors and staff to input and update courses in the schedule for current and future quarters.

SUOnline is a secure web-based system that provides access to course information, advisee information, student academic profiles, online class registration, course schedules, financial information, and other related task s.
The Registrar's Office provides this training to any group who requests it. A representative can come to your meeting place as long as there is an internet connection in the room. Request a training session with the registrar's office by email.
Over the next year, SUOnline will be phasing out and services are being migrated to a new and improved platform, MySeattleU. The new tool has increased capabilities and is mobile-friendly making it easier and more convenient to view employee information.
Currently, W-2 tax information is already available via MySeattleU. The next feature migrated is employee earnings statements and leave balances, formerly represented on our Pay Advices.
InformSU is Seattle University’s platform for meeting the institution’s reporting needs. Using various tools and methods, organizational, managerial/analytical, and financial reports are available on the platform.
InformSU provides improved reporting capability while utilizing the latest in data warehousing tools and solutions. The reporting and analytics that InformSU provides will set the university up for success now and in the future. Information on InformSU access and training is available here.
Seattle University utilizes Omnilert to send time-sensitive emergency communication to students, faculty, staff, and community members who opt-in.
By employing a variety of electronic communication tools, such as text messaging, email and RSS feeds, emergency messages can be sent simultaneously to registered campus community members via cell phone, home phone, and internet-connected devices.

The Director of Marketing and Communications provides both strategic and tactical support to programs. This position works one-on-one with Arts and Sciences Graduate Programs to generate inquiries from prospective students and develop marketing strategies. Undergraduate programs receive support in web communications, messaging, marketing project management and more.
The Director is supported during the academic year by the part-time Graduate Marketing Assistant.

One benefit of producing Zoom events is the opportunity to record the event and share it on your website. These events are excellent resources for student recruitment and retention, alumni engagement, and outreach to the broader community.

Many departments and programs have staff who maintain their websites. The A&S marketing and communications staff are available for support for those staff and for those who do not have trained staff.

While we are not trained graphic designers, we can help with basic layout of flyers, ads, posters, and other marketing materials.
If you have a project that requires graphic design, we can help determine if University Marketing and Communications might be able to help, or connect you with one of the external approved designers.
We are also happy to help student designers understand and work within the Seattle University brand guideline.
Seattle University photographers and videographers can be scheduled for events and marketing photos. Since they receive a large number of requests, it's best to first contact us to discuss your needs. We can craft the best case for a photographer and help submit the request.
If the University resources are not available, we can see if we can provide support or connect you with external professionals and/or students.
At the start of each academic year (the week before classes begin), all College of Arts and Sciences faculty and staff gather together to look at the year ahead. Each Convocation typically includes the introduction of new colleagues and an address from the Dean alongside other timely topics for the academic year.

Faculty and Staff of the College of Arts and Sciences gather once per quarter for an All College Meeting hosted by the Dean.
Meetings include discussion of timely topics and shared governance updates from the Dean, A&S Executive Committee, A&S Faculty-Staff Senate, and the A&S Representatives to Academic Assembly.
Dates and agendas are announced by email. All A&S Faculty and Staff are strongly encouraged to attend.
Once per quarter, the Dean hosts a coffee hour for all A&S Faculty and Staff. This is a quarterly social event for colleagues who might not otherwise see each other regularly to gather together over coffee, tea and treats. Watch for email invitations to join.
The LeRoux Scholarship is awarded annually to an outstanding junior student in the College of Arts and Sciences chosen by the Dean from a list of eligible students provided by Student Financial Services. The award varies in amount each year and is not renewable.
Each year during the first two weeks of Spring Quarter the Dean in conjunction with the moderator solicits nominations on behalf of the Naef Scholarship Program. Faculty recommend students who excel both as scholars and leaders on campus and in their communities. College nominees are chosen according to merit. The College nomination committee is appointed annually by the Assistant Dean for Student Academic Services and consists of two to three faculty members from different departments within the College. Candidates must meet the following criteria:
Students participate in special events under the leadership of the director of the program. Advisors are requested to promote qualified students by nominating candidates for this program. Final Selections follow interviews with a university-wide committee.

The Hickey Award honors the memory of Dr. Richard P. Hickey, professor of English, a beloved and respected teacher at Seattle University from 1947 until his death in 1968. The award is presented annually to an outstanding graduating senior who has earned a 3.5 or higher cumulative GPA, contributed to the academic life at Seattle University, and is active in the campus and community. The Assistant Dean for Student Academic Support manages the nomination and selection process on behalf of the Dean. Interdepartmental nominations are encouraged. More information is available here.
The LeRoux Leadership Award honors the memory of Fr. William Le Roux, S.J., who served as Dean of the College. The award is presented annually to an outstanding graduating senior who has demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities, shown academic excellence, and performed significant service to the College. The recipients personify in character and action the qualities of a liberal education, which constitute the "spirit" of our College. The Assistant Dean for Student Academic Support manages the nomination and selection process on behalf of the Dean. More information is available here.
The College of Arts & Sciences Leadership & Professional Engagement Award recognizes the graduating student in the College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Programs who has demonstrated exceptional leadership abilities and professional engagement. The recipient is an innovative forward thinker, making new roads in their chosen field. Their professional development efforts contribute to the vibrant educational experience in their graduate program.
The College of Arts & Sciences Social Justice and Community Engagement Award recognizes the graduating student in the College of Arts and Sciences Graduate Programs who has demonstrated a deep commitment to social justice and community engagement. The recipient has gone above and beyond in their service to others, carrying with them the founding principles of a Jesuit education, making choices as a leader for a just and humane world.
The Wallace Loh Academic Excellence Award honors the impact that Dr. Wallace Loh had upon graduate programs in the College of Arts and Sciences. Dr. Loh served as Dean of the College from 1999-2008. Under his leadership, three of the six Arts & Sciences Graduate Programs were created. The award is presented annually to an outstanding graduating student of the College of Arts & Sciences Graduate Programs.
Selection is based upon exceptional graduate work in the classroom, with qualification evidenced by paper/article submission, conference presentations, fellowship or scholarship awards, and interdisciplinary scholarship work. The Graduate Student Advisory Council (GSAC) manages the nomination and selection process on behalf of the Dean with oversight by the Assistant Dean for Student Academic Support.
The students of the College of Arts and Sciences under the leadership of A&S Student Executive Council (SEC) choose three annual faculty and staff awards to be presented at the A&S Student Awards Ceremony (held annually on the Friday before graduation). These awards are nominated by the A&S student body at-large and winners are chosen by a committee of students led by SEC.
Annual A&S Student Awards to Faculty and Staff:
The College of Arts and Sciences recognizes a number of staff and faculty members each year with an award announced at the All College Day Party on the Friday before finals week each June. Faculty and staff are invited in April to submit nominations for these awards, which are reviewed by a faculty committee of previous recipients that submits a recommendation to the dean.
Faculty and staff members who received an Outstanding Staff or Faculty Award in the previous year are not eligible to receive an award during the current year. Nominations should be based primarily on work faculty and staff members have done during the previous calendar year.
Categories and Criteria:
The Outstanding Teaching Award provides the occasion for the College to recognize the successful embodiment of the Jesuit and Catholic ideal of liberal education by a colleague whose courses are recognized by students and faculty alike as being uncommonly rigorous and challenging, and whose delivery of these courses is again recognized by students and faculty members as having a major impact on the intellectual, spiritual, and/or personal development of the students. Innovative student-centered teaching methods deserve special recognition.
The Outstanding Administrative Staff Award provides the occasion for the College to recognize a member of the administrative staff who has made an outstanding contribution to the staff, faculty, and students of the College.
The Outstanding Scholarship Award provides the occasion for the College to recognize the publication of a book, the production of a creative work, or the publication of a series of articles by a colleague that scholars in her or his discipline judge as representing a significant contribution to the field.
The Outstanding Service Award provides the occasion for the College to recognize a colleague who has given generously of his or her time and energy to the department, the College, the University, the community, or the profession, and whose service has had a significant positive impact on their colleagues.
The Outstanding Academic Advising Award provides the occasion for the College to recognize a colleague who has had a major impact on the intellectual, spiritual, and/or personal development of students through serving as their academic adviser.
The Outstanding Contract Faculty Award provides the occasion for the College to recognize a colleague in a full-time non-tenure track position who has met the criteria for the Outstanding Teaching, Scholarship, or Service Award (or who has made an outstanding contribution in a combination of areas).
The Outstanding Collegiality Award provides the occasion to recognize a member of the Arts & Sciences community who supports the effectiveness, well-being, advancement, and professional growth of her/his colleagues. This award recognizes an individual who has a significant positive professional and personal impact on the health and happiness of others in the college as we work together on our shared educational mission. All faculty and staff in the College of Arts & Sciences are eligible.
