Each year, in the weeks leading up to Earth Day (April 22nd) CEJS, in partnership with various Seattle University departments and student groups, encourages action and participation in initiatives that focus on the urgent need for environmental justice, sustainable development, and climate solutions. Description: PowerFul is a part of the JoyFul series and focuses on making positive impacts by celebrating the heroes within us all, as well as within our campus and community. The event will include a dining hall takeover with Feel Good Food menus as well as fun activities for students to engage with. See event flyer for more details.

Description: Two speakers from the Duwamish River Community Coalition (DRCC) Jamie Hearn (former ELS President, and current Superfund Manager at DRCC) and James Rasmussen (former DRCC Director) to come speak about the work the DRCC is doing regarding the clean-up of the Duwamish superfund site. You will explore the history of the Duwamish and its pollution, the effect of pollution on local communities, and the current clean-up efforts. Pizza will be provided. Description: As part of the Institute of Public Service’s “Conversations” series, and in conjunction with the Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability, Seattle University will host Washington Governor Jay Inslee, who will speak on “How America Can Lead the World in Alleviating Global Climate Change.” The governor will be answering questions on climate policy and other sustainability-related topics.

Description: Campus members will volunteer in work parties on SU campus to support the organically and pesticide-free maintained urban gardening efforts lead by the SU Grounds team. They will participate in tree and shrub planting, cleaning the pollinator garden, do planting in the new rain garden, and more. Want to come and help out? Please join at any of the days/times above. Description: Join us for the 4th edition of Earth Talks, Seattle University’s annual showcase of 5-minute sustainability-focused presentations by students, staff, faculty, and community partners. This year’s keynote speaker will be SU alumni ('21) Patience Malaba, Executive Director of the Housing Development Consortium, 2020 Bullitt Foundation Environmental Fellowship awardee, and named one of the 2023 Puget Sound Business Journal’s top “40 Under 40.” The event’s theme is Care for our Common Home. Earth Talks is hosted by the Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability (CEJS), and co-sponsored by the Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture (ICTC) and the Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Engagement (CEIE).
All speakers will attend in person, but audience members can attend VIRTUALLY BY ZOOM. Zoom details will be provided closer to the event date on the Earth Talks website: www.earth-talks.org.

Description: All are welcome to join the Creation Care Network for its annual environmental justice summit. The day will provide space to ground our collective work spiritually, discern how the Spirit is calling us to build reciprocity with the Earth, and taking action together for climate justice! Description: Colleagues in Jesuit Education is a program that gathers together Seattle University faculty, staff and Jesuit colleagues for conversation about our Jesuit and Catholic educational mission in the relaxing atmosphere of a shared meal and evening discussion on three evenings this academic year. On April 27th, Christina Roberts, PhD. and Pat Twohy, SJ, will discuss serving as prophets of Indigenous life-ways that embody our common call to protect and safeguard sacred lands, waters, and creatures. The Green Seattle Partnership is a collaboration between City of Seattle, community groups and non-profits, businesses, schools, and thousands of volunteers working together to restore and actively maintain the City’s forested parklands. The Green Seattle Partnership coordinates restoration projects to care for urban forest and bring people into the parks to build community through hands-on volunteerism. Description: Celebrate Earth Day at Carkeek Park on Saturday April 22 from noon to 4pm! Enjoy games, nature activities, volunteer projects and intertidal beach exploration for all ages! Activities include lowtide and forest walks, salmon feeding at the imprint pond, stormwater activities, a salmon dissection and arts and crafts activities. Volunteer projects include adopting a neighborhood storm drain and litter pickup throughout the park and beach. View the event flyer to learn more.

Description: The City Nature Challenge 2023 motivates people all around the world collaborate to share observations in nature. Participants make observations of nature in their cities and upload their photos to the website to show the world how biodiverse our city is. Last year - Seattle logged over 7,000 observations of 1200 different species. Logging takes place April 28th - May 1st and identification takes place May 2nd - May 7th. The winner will be announced on May 8th. You can learn more about this bioblitz here.
