EARTH MONTH® 2023

Each year, in the weeks leading up to Earth Day (April 22nd) CEJS, in partnership with various Seattle University departments and student groups, encourages action and participation in initiatives that focus on the urgent need for environmental justice, sustainable development, and climate solutions. Join us for the many events and initiatives organized during Earth Month 2023 at Seattle University. See below for the Earth Month 2023 Program.

Duwamish: A Conversation About Pollution and its Effect on Environmental Justice Communities

Description: Two speakers from the Duwamish River Community Coalition (DRCC) Jamie Hearn (former ELS President, and current Superfund Manager at DRCC) and James Rasmussen (former DRCC Director) to come speak about the work the DRCC is doing regarding the clean-up of the Duwamish superfund site. You will explore the history of the Duwamish and its pollution, the effect of pollution on local communities, and the current clean-up efforts. Pizza will be provided. Description: How well do you really know our Earth? Join RHA and CEJS for Earth Month Trivia on April 13th from 6:30 to 7:30 to find out! Governor Jay Inslee to Speak on: "How America Can Lead the World in Alleviating Global Climate Change."

Description: As part of the Institute of Public Service’s “Conversations” series, and in conjunction with the Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability, Seattle University will host Washington Governor Jay Inslee, who will speak on “How America Can Lead the World in Alleviating Global Climate Change.” The governor will be answering questions on climate policy and other sustainability-related topics.

Work Parties in the SU Gardens hosted by the Grounds team

Description: Campus members will volunteer in work parties on SU campus to support the organically and pesticide-free maintained urban gardening efforts lead by the SU Grounds team. They will participate in tree and shrub planting, cleaning the pollinator garden, do planting in the new rain garden, and more. Want to come and help out? Please join at any of the days/times above. Engineers for a Sustainable World Plant Sale

Description: Engineers for a Sustainable World will be hosting a plant sale where students will be able to purchase indoor plants on campus to raise money for sustainability projects led by ESW, increase student sustainability awareness and support the local nursery your beautiful plant is coming from. . EARTH TALKS 2023 - A Lunch Event

When: April 21st, 12:00 PM - 1:45 PM. (DOORS OPEN: 11:30AM - LIGHT LUNCH SERVED)
Where: Le Roux Room (STCN #160) or ZOOM
Description: Join us for the 4th edition of Earth Talks, Seattle University’s annual showcase of 5-minute sustainability-focused presentations by students, staff, faculty, and community partners. This year’s keynote speaker will be SU alumni ('21) Patience Malaba, Executive Director of the Housing Development Consortium, 2020 Bullitt Foundation Environmental Fellowship awardee, and named one of the 2023 Puget Sound Business Journal’s top “40 Under 40.” The event’s theme is Care for our Common Home. Earth Talks is hosted by the Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability (CEJS), and co-sponsored by the Institute for Catholic Thought and Culture (ICTC) and the Center for Ecumenical and Interreligious Engagement (CEIE).

All speakers will attend in person, but audience members can attend VIRTUALLY BY ZOOM. Zoom details will be provided closer to the event date on the Earth Talks website: www.earth-talks.org.

Turning the Tide for Ecology - 2023 Catholic Earth Day Summit

When: April 22nd, 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM

Description: All are welcome to join the Creation Care Network for its annual environmental justice summit. The day will provide space to ground our collective work spiritually, discern how the Spirit is calling us to build reciprocity with the Earth, and taking action together for climate justice!  The day will include  Mass by Archbishop Paul D. Etienne, Keynotes on integral ecology and salmon restoration, a panel on climate action, and more! For more information and registration, see here. Description: Redhawk Dining (Compass Group) is proud to participate in Stop Food Waste Day as a day that drives awareness to reduce food waste both at home and at work. Weight the Waste - Schedule of Events

  • Weight the Waste: We will be weighing food waste for the Stop Food Waste Day lunch period! Instead of guests tossing their scraps, we're asking them to add them to our waste pile to show just how much food is wasted every meal period, every day.
  • Become a Waste Warrior: Guests are invited to play "Are You a Waste Warrior?" They can answer questions around the dining hall about food waste and the first 50 players receive a FREE 12 oz coffee voucher.
  • Food Waste Pledge: Those who take the #stopfoodwaste day pledge will get a sticker and a coloring book!
  • Low waste menu:
    • Herb roasted tofu
    • Herb roasted 8 cut chicken
    • Roasted vegetables (unpeeled carrots, beets, and parsnips with beet greens)

Colleagues Series: Caring for Our Common Home

Description: Colleagues in Jesuit Education is a program that gathers together Seattle University faculty, staff and Jesuit colleagues for conversation about our Jesuit and Catholic educational mission in the relaxing atmosphere of a shared meal and evening discussion on three evenings this academic year. On April 27th, Christina Roberts, PhD. and Pat Twohy, SJ, will discuss serving as prophets of Indigenous life-ways that embody our common call to protect and safeguard sacred lands, waters, and creatures. Capitol Hill EcoDistrict Native Plant Sale

When: April 16th, 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM
Where: Cal Anderson Park
Description: Capitol Hill EcoDistrict and Seattle Audubon are teaming up to celebrate Earth Month this April. Join them on the Upper Meadow at Cal Anderson Park for a plant sale and seed exchange. Shop for wildlife-supporting native plants from local farming collective, bring your favorite seeds to swap, or take some to sow from our free seed inventory. You can learn more here.

The Green Seattle Partnership (GSP) Volunteering Opportunities

The Green Seattle Partnership is a collaboration between City of Seattle, community groups and non-profits, businesses, schools, and thousands of volunteers working together to restore and actively maintain the City’s forested parklands. The Green Seattle Partnership coordinates restoration projects to care for urban forest and bring people into the parks to build community through hands-on volunteerism. During Earth Month (and beyond), they are hosting many hands-on, volunteering events that anyone can attend. You can learn more about volunteering with GSP here.

Earth Day Celebration at Carkeek Park

When: April 22nd, 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Where: Carkeek Park Playground
Description: Celebrate Earth Day at Carkeek Park on Saturday April 22 from noon to 4pm! Enjoy games, nature activities, volunteer projects and intertidal beach exploration for all ages! Activities include lowtide and forest walks, salmon feeding at the imprint pond, stormwater activities, a salmon dissection and arts and crafts activities. Volunteer projects include adopting a neighborhood storm drain and litter pickup throughout the park and beach. View the event flyer to learn more.

City Nature Challenge 2023: Seattle-Tacoma Metropolitan Area

When: April 28th - May 1st
Where: Anywhere in the Seattle-Tacoma Metropolitan Area!
Description: The City Nature Challenge 2023 motivates people all around the world collaborate to share observations in nature. Participants make observations of nature in their cities and upload their photos to the website to show the world how biodiverse our city is. Last year - Seattle logged over 7,000 observations of 1200 different species. Logging takes place April 28th - May 1st and identification takes place May 2nd - May 7th. The winner will be announced on May 8th. You can learn more about this bioblitz here.
