About the Project

Energy consumption in affordable housing is the leading cost impacting affordability for residents, owners and staff.

Students compared the effectiveness of energy efficient strategies used at two low income senior housing projects, Salishan Gardens and International Place, located in Salishan, WA. Both locations serve low income seniors who earn less than 50% of the Area Median Income.

While the buildings are identical in terms of location, square footage, number of units and number of tenants, the systems for heating, ventilation and domestic hot water are vastly different. The results of the study can be used to inform decisions about building systems for not only other senior housing projects, but for other multi-family apartments in the Pacific Northwest and HUD-funded projects nationwide.
