March: RecycleMania Month

Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference

The Washington & Oregon Higher Education Sustainability Conference (WOHESC) is a platform for inspiring change, facilitating action, and promoting collaboration related to sustainability within the region's higher education institutions. Through conversation, workshops, and networking opportunities, the annual conference empowers participants to seek solutions in their own communities. Seattle University students get 30% off registration by using the discount code SEATTLEUCEJS20.

CANCELLED: RECYCLEMANIA: Game Day! Zero Waste Basketball 

Due to the guidance we’ve received from the university and public health agencies related to COVID-19, the Zero waste basketball game has been cancelled.

Description
Come and support a zero-waste athletics event! SU’s Athletic Department, Recycling Department, and Green Team—in conjunction with Recyclemania-will be hosting zero waste event to raise awareness of proper waste disposal and the zero waste efforts here on campus. We will be collecting all the waste produced from the game, sorting the materials and conducting a waste audit to see how clean each of the streams are.

CANCELLED. RECYCLEMANIA: Garbology V 'Recycling Recovery from the Living Dead'

Due to the guidance we’ve received from the university and public health agencies related to COVID-19, the Garbology event has been cancelled. We’ll keep you informed if we decide to organize the event at a later date.

When: March 11, 10:00am - 3:00pm
Where: LEML Plaza (Quad in front of the Library)
Description: On March 11, you'll see a "mound of waste" at the Library Plaza: one day's worth of SU's waste will be collected to then be sorted by staff, faculty, and students. Have any questions about "what goes where"? Stop by and ask the experts from SU's recycling crew and student-led Green Team. Or come and help sort at this campus waste-audit. Even 5 minutes of sorting can be an educational and eye-opening moment to find out how much of SU's trash could actually be diverted from the landfill! KUOW: That's Debatable 'Washington State can decarbonize in a decade'

When: March 11, 7:00pm - 8:30pm

Description: Join KUOW Live at our next That’s Debatable event. KUOW’s Ross Reynolds will moderate a lively debate on whether Washington State can decarbonize in the next decade - achieving zero emissions from our energy use. We’ll hear both sides. RECYCLEMANIA: What Goes Where Workshop

When: February 5, Workshop at 12:30pm-1:30pm.

Description: Learn out about responsible waste disposal, get answers to all your questions about recycling and compost, and how to incorporate zero waste practices into your everyday life. Students, staff and faculty are invited to attend and learn about recycling in Seattle and become a Green Team waste expert. RECYCLEMANIA: Zero Waste Trivia Night

When: February 5, 6:00pm-7:00pm.

Hawksnest Bistro (STCN 3rd Floor)
Description: All SU members are welcome to join SU’s Green Team for a night of interactive trivia about responsible waste disposal in the Hawksnest Bistro. This event is fun way to test your wits around proper waste disposal and see if you truly know “What Goes Where”! Sustainability focused prizes will be awarded to the top 3 placers.

RECYCLEMANIA: Community Recycling Day

When: February 12, 8:00am-2:00pm

At the Bellarmine Turnaround -1111 E Columbia St 
(Between Bellarmine Hall and Sullivan Hall School of Law)
Description: Get your spring cleaning done early and bring your home and office recyclables for FREE to the SU Recycling Event.

For a full list of accepted items, see hereItems accepted include: small appliances, batteries, books, confidential papers (which will be shredded), compact fluorescent light bulbs, electronics and accessories, clothing and textiles, tools, office supplies, plastic grocery bags, Styrofoam blocks, packaging material and toner cartridges. Do not bring chemicals, hazardous materials, mattresses, or furniture. Staff will help unload heavy items. Hard drives and other storage devices will be wiped through a secure data destruction program.

The Earth Month collective at SU is in search of an Earth Month logo to publicize the many wonderful campus events in April 2020. Submit your creation and… your design could be the new face of earth month at SeattleU!

WHAT and WHY? April 2020 will be dedicated to the celebration of the Earth! This year is special because April 22nd marks the 50th anniversary of Earth Day!

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE? All campus members! Are you an artist, a thinker, and/or a person with an opinion? Care about the Earth? Answered yes to any or all of the above… we need YOU!

How the Potty Trained Us by Shawn "The Puru" Shafner

Description: Join Redhawk Dining's Wellness & Sustainability Manager, Brianna Ballard, and Executive Chef, Orion Balliet, for a 1-hour cooking demonstration that allows participants to cook and learn about sustainable culinary techniques. The theme for this cooking demonstration revolves around sustainable cooking and minimizing food scraps in the kitchen.

Energy and Climate Vision for the Future with Professor Michael McElroy

Environmental Leaders Summit

When: Friday December 6th, 9am-2pm
Where: Seattle University Campion Ballroom
Description: The YMCA Earth Service Corps is inviting local teens and adults from around the Puget Sound to discuss the environmental issues facing our communities. This forum will provide opportunities to share ideas, talk with environmental professionals, and connect with your peers about the environmental topics you care about. Join community leaders and young environmentalists for a day of dialogue and discussion as we strive to create more sustainable schools and neighborhoods! There is no cost/fee to attend this event. "Redhawks in Wonderland" Plant Sale

When: Thursday, December 5, 2019 at 11:30AM-2:30PM

Description: Food with Spirit will host their plant sale in partnership with Redhawk Dining's special “Redhawks in Wonderland” event. They will sell their plants from 11:30AM-2:30 PM. Since the plants are planted in used compostable cups, folks will also be able to decorate the “tea cups” using ribbons and markers.

Description: On Saturday November 2, “Green Seattle Day,” hundreds of volunteers will plant thousands of native trees and shrubs in 17 parks throughout Seattle. This annual event is organized by the Green Seattle Partnership which is now the largest urban forest restoration project in the nationJoin in the fun and have a hand in planting Seattle’s future forest! Seattle University’s Green Team, Food with Spirit, and CEJS will help out at the Maple Wood Playfield together with the Student Conservation Association (SCA). All community members are welcome, no experience is necessary. The event is family friendly and open to all ages. Environmental Lunchtime Talks--Environmental Science Department

Description: The Environmental Science program will be holding student-led brown-bag lunchtime talks in Engineering 307 on the first two Tuesdays of the 2019 Fall quarter (October 1 and 8). These events will bring students and faculty together to discuss summer experiences that relate to environmental issues or outdoor activities. The sessions are intended to provide an informal setting in which you will strengthen connections with like-minded students and hear about upcoming opportunities. Students and faculty are welcome to bring a few photos to share with the group. If you’d like to share, please simply show up on Tuesday with your photos (USB or Google Drive work well). The Future of Food: A Lunch Hour Event with Author Timothy Wise

Description: The Environmental Studies program in conjunction with the Center for Environmental Justice and Sustainability (CEJS) will be hosting a discussion with author Timothy Wise on his new book "Eating Tomorrow: Agribusiness, family farmers and the battle for the future of food." As Director of the Land and Food Rights Program at Small Planet Institute and senior research fellow at Tufts University's Global Development and Environment Institute, Wise has researched farm policy and agricultural development in Mexico, Malawi, Tanzania, Mozambique, Zambia, and India. SEATTLE CLIMATE WALKOUT

Description: On Friday, Sept. 20, millions around the world are joining student climate strikers demanding climate justice. 09/20/2019 is slated to become the biggest day of climate action in the world’s history. Learn more about the youth-led global demonstrations and why this moment is so vital in this article by the Union of Concerned Scientists.

In Seattle, Friday will mark a full day of youth-led action, including a peaceful march to City Hall, organized by a broad coalition of youth and adult organizations. For more information about the Friday events in Seattle, see here.

Seattle U members: If you’d like to join a group of faculty and staff for this important event and show solidarity across generations, please join the  and the  at the reflection pool at the Chapel of St. Ignatius 11:40  a.m. on Friday.
