Choose Your Endorsement

An endorsement is the specific subject matter or content area listed on a teaching certificate in Washington State. The state requires teacher candidates to demonstrate the content knowledge needed to teach the grade level standards for their initial endorsement subject(s). All applicants must complete the endorsement coursework outlined in their respective endorsement verification form. This coursework must be completed prior to starting the Hybrid MEd program. Applicants do not need to have all of the coursework completed at the time of application; however, they should indicate plans for how they will complete the requirements prior to the program start date on their submitted endorsement form.

Seattle University offers:

  • Elementary Endorsement (K-5)
  • Secondary Endorsement (6-12) in the following areas:
    • Biology
    • Chemistry
    • Earth & Space Science
    • English Language Arts
    • History
    • Physics
    • Social Studies

Review endorsement requirements here for all endorsements.

If you are interested in teaching middle school (6-8), you should pursue a secondary endorsement. You can do your student teaching internship in middle school grades. Once you obtain your teaching certificate, you can add on a Middle Level Endorsement in Humanities, Mathematics, and/or Science by taking a test

Endorsement Advising Appointment

The Master of Education program provides individualized endorsement advising for applicants. You can request an endorsement advising session by emailing teacheredendorsements@seattleu.edu or schedule a Zoom or Phone Call appointment by linking through here. The endorsement form and instructions can be found here. We encourage applicants to seek endorsement advising as early as they can during the application process.
