About the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards

The mission of the National Board is to advance student learning and achievement by establishing the definitive standards and systems for certifying accomplished educators, providing programs and advocating policies that support excellence in teaching and leading, and engaging National Board certified teachers and leaders in that process.

The Seattle University (SU) National Board Support Program provides professional learning during regional and certificate-alike meetings. Through the SU National Board Support Program, teachers can earn clock hours.

Program Components

Orientation - Candidates attend a session to get a head start by planning lessons, becoming familiar with the standards, and the portfolio requirements.

Small Group Meetings - Candidates meet in small groups facilitated by National Board Certified Teachers.

Certificate-alike group sessions offer opportunities for candidates to meet in certificate groups. Sessions focus on common certification requirements.

Who Should Participate?

To be eligible for the National Board Certification process, a candidate must:

• Hold a bachelor’s degree (Exception: Career and Tech Ed teachers must have met the licensure requirements for the state);
• Have completed three full years of teaching or school counseling before certification.
• Possess a valid state teaching or school counseling license (Exception: If you are teaching where a license is not required, you have taught in schools recognized and approved to operate by the state).

Candidates must attend and fully participate in all support meetings and complete the portfolio and assessment center exercises according to published timelines.
